Is it possible to have a cat with no litter tray indoors?

That's all, really.

I haven't had a cat for some years now, mainly due to not having a good place in this house to pop a litter tray.

Is catflap-only even possible? Slightly wondering if rescues might have an outdoorsy kind of cat we might be able to give a home to, maybe. We live in a quiet cul de sac which backs into woods so would be good territory for a mouser.

Any thoughts?

You can train them like dogs. Most people I know with cats don’t have litter trays or a cat flap. They just get let in and out when they need to go 🤷🏼‍♀️

They won't go outside if it's monsoon weather like we've had today.

Why are you so keen to avoid having a tray?

Probably because they stink and most people would rather avoid having a box of piss and shit in their kitchen, especially when there’s other pets or small children in the house. It’s not hard to house train a cat

We don't have a litter tray - they just use the catflap.

We had to use a litter tray when they were kittens until about 5 months. Couldn't wait to get rid of it.

Fucking hell. In which case 'most people you know' have no idea what being a good and responsible cat owner means. Cats should always be able to toilet. Just like humans, they can't hold it comfortably, and not having a suitable place to go stresses them. And their humans cannot be around and alert 24 hours a day. What about nights for a start?

BiscoffSundae · 05/06/2022 16:01

My kitchen women is always kept open, I don’t have a cat flap or litter tray cat comes and goes when she wants out of the window...

youllneedthisfish · 05/06/2022 16:03

Of course! Ours thought that as the litter tray was inside the house the whole house was fair game Hmm. Then I put the litter tray (with hood) outside, and eventually got rid. Cat flaps all the way

BiscoffSundae · 05/06/2022 16:03

Women should be window 🤣🤣 no idea why it changed

Our old boy is 15. Only used a litter tray until he was neutered and big enough to go outside. May have to introduce if he gets too elderly.

Yes, of course, but if caught short might poo in a corner.

I have a litter tray but DCat hardly ever uses it, next door's garden is much better

Grim!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 05/06/2022 16:07

You can train a cat to use the normal toilet. There is a 'kit' available on Amazon called 'CitiKitty' for this. I do know someone has done this successfully (although you might need to start as a kitten).
However they won't flush it and they leave the lid up...

Basically, they don't want the tray because they don't want to have to deal with the stink of piss and shit or the cleaning of it, they would rather just have the cat go through the cat flap to go shit and piss in other people's gardens.

MsOllie · 05/06/2022 16:15

House training is fine, unless you're out at work and the cat suddenly has an upset stomach..
mine often uses his tray overnight and I have no cat flap. He won't wee outside anyway
It's never "full of piss" because I clean it ASAP, and use a clumping litter. Scoop out the wee clump and done

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 05/06/2022 16:24

Yeah almost all of my neighbours have cats and they come and wreck havoc in our gardens, shitting and digging up my plants. No birds in the gardens either, just cat poop

PronounMadness · 05/06/2022 16:26

You’ve reminded me I need to bulk order cayenne pepper. We’re almost out. Thanks.

SheldontheWonderSchlong · 05/06/2022 16:32

So this is why my garden is full of cat shit!

If you have a cat, you should have a litter tray for it. I do, even though I'm in a tiny flat with barely any room for it. My cat comes back in to use it so I know he's not crapping in someone else's garden.
It's not particularly pleasant but it's the responsible thing to do.

Do you think the same about dogs? That it’s cruel and stresses them out because they can’t piss and shit in the house whenever they’d like? It’s a non issue. You let them out before bed and then again in the morning. If a cat needs to go out in between they tend to make their feelings very known, generally by screeching in your face until you get up and let them out

BDeyes · 05/06/2022 16:51

of course it is, always had cats throughout my life until my last one passed away about 4 years ago and we never had a litter tray and for many years we didn't even have a cat flap. they would let us know when they wanted to go out and they never messed in the house. why do people not known these things? my stupid neighbour sent her short haired cat to the groomers 🤪just for it to brushed!, groomer collected that cat and brought it back after an hour at a cost of £36 cat looked no different and could have easily been brushed at home! it doesn't cost me that much to have my long haired dog fully groomed.

Another one telling women what we should be. 😂😂

Helenahandkart · 05/06/2022 17:04

We had a litter tray for the first two weeks, but now she just goes in the garden. 10 years with no indoors accidents at all. As long as the cat can always get outside when needed there’s no reason at all to have a litter tray - barring
illness or old age.

Having a litter tray doesn't mean they will use it. Mine haven't used ours for weeks.

rnsaslkih · 05/06/2022 17:29

I had to pave over my front flower beds and bit of garden to stop other people’s cats crapping in it. I tried every trick in the book for 10 years. Nothing worked. Apart from the £££ paving.

I wouldn’t want a neighbour getting a cat without even trying with a litter tray. Guess there’s nothing to stop you though. Not against any rules. But just consider if you are happy with where the daily turds might end up.

JubileeTrifle · 05/06/2022 17:49

Mine won’t use one. Even when had heavy snow he stuck his ass over the doorstep and went.
We just let him out. Always Chuck him out before work in the morning for a short while. He’s never had an accident.

Kittyshopping · 05/06/2022 20:57

I don’t want to argue about it, but I’ve had covered hooded litter trays for years, both inside and outside, and never any health issues. Just happy pussy cats.
