Emergency vet or wait?

My cat has been gagging/trying to be sick all day but mainly vomiting white foam and bits of grass. I first noticed it last night when he woke me up with what I thought was a furball. I have just been and lured him in from outside with some dreamies; he enthusiastically ate one then immediately threw it up. He doesn’t seem lethargic but definitely struggling to settle and get comfortable.

Would you take to the emergency/OOH vets in this scenario or wait more time to see if it passes? He’s only 5, usually fit and healthy (and greedy).

Fluffy Cat (who has since been renamed Sad Cat) has been similar this week. Was sick in Monday, and hadn't eaten by Tuesday afternoon (but had drunk a decent amount of water).

We rang the vet who wasn't too concerned as he'd been drinking, but asked us to bring them in the next day. Which we did, and his temperature was 3 degrees higher than expected, so he had a couple of jabs to reduce the infection.

It wasn't an instant fix, but he seems to be on the mend now, albeit still with a reduced appetite. So long story short, it's probably not an emergency, but if he doesn't improve tomorrow, I'd take him first thing Monday.

My cat had that once and the emergency vet said it was probably a bit of grass stuck in his soft pallette. When I phoned late night vet she gave the option of a £250 emergency appointment or said it was safe to wait till 8am. A huge bit of grass came shooting out of his nose eventually so he didn't need the vet.

I would advise phoning the OOH line but it is probably safe to leave till the morning.

My dcat did this recently. Luckily the next day she was eating and drinking normally with the occasional foamy vomit. 3 days and back to normal. It was almost like something had scratched her throat, I did check with a torch but couldn't see anything.
Hope you dcat is better soon.

I’ve just remembered we get free video consultations with our pet insurance so am staying awake for a call with them at 11.30pm. Poor cat is still wandering around retching.

Can dcat drink?

Catspyjamas01 · 21/05/2022 23:15

No he doesn’t seem to be drinking now although he was this morning.

I would take him as my DC had similar. He is also a greedy boy and had inhaled his food and managed to give himself aspiration pneumonia.

Definitely emergency vet

Gingerkittykat · 22/05/2022 03:03

Any updates?

We did a virtual vet consultation at midnight who advised giving it another hour and taking him to the emergency vet if he was still retching. However I ended up falling asleep with cat on me, he seems better this morning so are giving the vet a miss for now. Hopefully he just ate something he shouldn’t have.
