Stressed Cat

Hello,

My cat had lots of blood in her urine so I've taken her to the vets, theyve said there's no infection in her urine just stress.

She's always been a nervous cat and our house is a bit chaotic with kids, I've got a feliway and some special cat food on the way.

Does anyone else have any tips for a stressed out cat?

Feliway helped our previous cat when I had to take her from elderly mum and put her with us with our wee daughter.

A climbing frame so she can get away from small children

A dark place in your wardrobe

One on one time with you when the children aren’t around

A safe place away from the kids is crucial.

For a while our cat’s favourite spot was on top of a bookshelf in the living room.

We have an elderly nervous cat, who hides in a dark place when it gets too much for him. Try a cardboard box with a catflap-sized hole in the side if you don't have a corner they can retreat to. Make it clear to the kids that they must not disturb him when he's there. Feliway helps too.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions,

The kids don't really go upstairs so she's not massively disturbed but I think she's just on edge. She doesn't have a specific hideaway spot so maybe I need to make one in the dark for her

Also, make sure she has food, water and a litter tray upstairs (near wherever her preferred quiet places are) so she doesn't need to run the gauntlet of noise/stressy places when she is hungry thirsty or needs a wee.

Perhaps look at something like Zyklene which is a herbal supplement that you can add to food and which calms cats down massively... you can use it everyday and it doesn't stay in their system so is safe for long term use.

There's also a cat equivalent of Cystese which might help with the urine problems - although can't remember it's name! Let me try & Google.... in fact, it is Cystease and made by Felliway so that could be an option too? It's in special on Amazon at the mo...

Cystease and D-Mannose tablets have had a hugely positive impact on our cat. He had crystals (now dissolved through diet) but he also over-grooms and the vet suspect it's stress-related as he's generally really nervous anyway.

I got the tablets on Amazon - they cost around £10 a month for both and we've not had a single re-occurrence since we started him on them in December :)

He's also on Purina urinary dry food for S/t crystals. He won't eat the wet version so we just use his old wet food as the vet basically said any wet food was better than none at all. We also increased the number of water bowls around the house and made sure he had plenty of quiet, high-up places to escape to.
