My babies pooping in the neighbours garden

Our lovely neighbours that we get on very well with, called today to say our cats are pooing in their garden.

Apart from apologising, what can we do or suggest to them that they can do to discourage the cats. It's a terraced house so cats love exploring neighbours gardens unfortunately

Cat proof your garden. There is special fencing you can buy that prevents them from being able to get out.

If no way to put a secure fence all the way round then a cat run so your cat can go outside but can't go outside the cat run.

Or do what I've done which is create a really great toilet area in my garden for my litter tray refusing cat. (We still have one, she will only use it if there's deep snow outside!)

A nice private area with well turned soil is ideal. Clear it daily.

Failing that then apologise profusely and go round there daily and pick it up.

Cats have the right to roam.

if you don’t like cat shit, you probably don’t like fox shit, so really if you don’t want shit in your garden, then you will have to do something about it

What a joke, I live in a very rural area where we have a lot of foxes, the dogs I walk are always rolling in fox poo but I've never had one shit in my garden. The neighbours three cats though are at it all the fucking time and it is disgusting, particularly in my vegetable patch. You sound totally selfish tbf, if you want cats that's absolutely fine but keep them in your own garden so they're not shitting in everyone else's/at risk of getting knocked down.

theleafandnotthetree · 19/05/2022 15:10

Before I read which topic this was in I thought it was actual human babies shitting in the neighbours garden. YABVVU for referring to your cats as babies. That is all.

Carveitup · 19/05/2022 15:15

I don’t have fox shit in my garden because I had someone in to shoot the foxes (they ate my hens.) Not really decent behaviour to shoot a cat, and though I used to get next door’s cat shit in my garden I don’t any more since I started throwing what they left in my flower beds over the hedge and it kept landing on their lovely soft topped Aston Martin.

There really are civil ways of behaving, but claiming your cat shitting in someone else’s garden is not your problem is not civilised, and can lead you being treated in an entirely uncivilised way.

PS cats are not babies.

headofpotsandpans · 19/05/2022 15:06

Seriously? Hmm. You don't think the onus is on the owner to stop them getting out?

No. That's mad.

Mad...
No. It's selfish arseholery, actually.

Johnnysgirl · 19/05/2022 15:16

To imagine neighbouring gardens are at your cat's disposal, that is.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 19/05/2022 15:24

Just ask your cats nicely to poop somewhere else is clearly the obvious answer.

Also, although cats do have the right to roam, if you buy a cat, and they are “your babies”, then it’s to your benefit to reduce roaming to protect the health of your animal.

And protect the health of other people. Cat shit is rancid and full of parasites associated with psychosis.

CottonSock · 19/05/2022 14:50

I lay mesh or netting on the ground where they choose to shit. It does stop them. We also chase out of garden every time woofing.

I have a hillarious image in my head now 😂

Mariposista · 19/05/2022 15:27

Keep the cats inside? What a ridiculous idea. Tell the neighbours to put old tea bags covered in lavender or citrus oils in their flowerbeds - works wonders. Or just old orange peel - cats hate it. Otherwise, just get them a shovel! Cats will go where they want I'm afraid.

My neighbours once complained to me and I said ok I will have a word and tell him to stop…

If you don’t want animals in your garden the onus is on you to stop them coming in

umm no. you choose to have cats, its down to you

Aurea · 19/05/2022 15:33

Well our neighbour has two cats that poop in our flowerbeds regularly and rather
disgusting our dogs will eat it. I then have to wash their mouths and they end up with squitty poop for a couple of days. It's so rank! 🤮

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/05/2022 15:48

@Beepbopblop you'd get the poo thrown back if you tried that with me.

Fortunately my cat-owning neighbours aren't wankers.

Floralnomad · 19/05/2022 15:50

Cat proof your garden so that your ‘babies’ shit on your own property .

Flossflower · 19/05/2022 16:27

They are cats not babies!
You could stop them by making sure they use a litter tray before going out but that requires you to make some effort and take responsibility.
I stop this by buying packets of wooden kebab skewers and put them in the flower beds pointed end up every 3 inches. They last for years

Can it be proven it's just your cats, or are their other cats around too

coffeecupsandfairylights · 19/05/2022 19:05

The indoor/outdoor cat debate is alive and well, I see 😂

Regardless of your views on outdoor cats, legally speaking - they have the right to roam so you're doing nothing wrong by letting them out, but I do think you should be doing as much as possible to encourage them to toilet at home.

So, provide multiple litter trays in the house, and dig a patch up in the garden so they can toilet there too. I would also tell the neighbours to put spikes in their flower beds, and give them full permission to soak your cats with the hosepipe!

^ this. Your cats, your shit, your problem. Get them a litter tray/toilet area on your own property.

Meanwhile, go & pick up the disgusting disease causing cat shit from your neighbours' property,=, buy them a gift, apologise profusely & ask if they want you to take any further measures

I have just redone my borders, & am finding my neighbours cats using it as a giant toilet - I plan to bag up the waste and leave it on my neighbour's doorstep, if not through the letter box

We don’t have pets for lots of reasons but I’m sick to the back teeth of other peoples shitting in my garden
i don’t see why I should have to shell out my hard earned money to keep them out-or to have to touch their disgusting shit
your pet-you deal with it
cos if my neighbour doesn’t soon,I’m shoving the whole lot through her letterbox

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 19/05/2022 20:29

I'd be interested in a solution for pigeons. They poop in our garden, all over the path, it's really annoying.
They don't appear to have rings on their legs so I can't contact any owner.
Do you think a plastic owl (with rotating head) would deter them?

Moonface123 · 19/05/2022 20:32

l leave space in my borders, my cats will always go there, if l heavy plant my flower borders thats when they look for somewhere else, so leave gaps around your garden, they are creatures of habit, l would also buy small water pistol for the neighbours, cats will soon get the message and stay away, its a shame to fall out over it. Put catnip in your garden, make it as inviting as you can for them, l do have other cats come into my garden but its not a problem for me, l can understand if you have young children what a nuisance it must be.

Ladyelizabeth · 19/05/2022 20:40

Black pepper sprinkled over works very well

Thirdsummerofourdiscontent · 19/05/2022 20:48

They have told you, that means this upsets them and they expect you to do something. Cat poo is foul.

FourChimneys · 19/05/2022 20:49

I cannot imagine being so selfish that I would let a cat shit on someone else's property. I can't even begin to imagine that mindset.

Either sort it out or get rid of the cats. Your cats, your problem.

We had a problem with a neighbours cat a few years ago. I put the poo on their doorstep in bags and gave them a bill for the laser and chemical deterrents we bought, nearly £100. They weren't happy but paid up.

Hyperion100 · 19/05/2022 20:49

Would you fork out for an electric fence?

Or offer to let your neighbours take a dump in your garden..you know, as payback.
