Help me figure out what to do with our cat

So firstly, I'm a cat lover, always have been and I've had cats for all of my 35 years. We got our cat exactly 2 years ago from a rescue centre. As it was lockdown, we were matched to her so didn't actually meet her before collection. But that was fine as we specifically asked for a cat that would be suitable with a toddler and she definitely was. When we got her, she'd been abandoned and found near some shops. Plus, she'd just had a litter of kittens (possibly her second litter). So she was spayed just before she came home with us.

She settled fine at our house. Accepted our toddling ds, was relaxed and although she could be a little bit fiesty with her play, no problems. Then last summer I had dd and again, she was fine with a new baby. But then a few months after that, we moved house and I think this is where her behaviour started to become erratic.

So in the last 8 months since we moved, our cat has had issues with going to the toilet. Never had this at the other house. At night, we keep her in and she goes in the utility room. I know she doesn't love it in their but she is safe at least. She has a litter tray normally, just in case. But I've had to clear up poo, wee, mountains of hair, blood from where she's been scratching, etc so often that's been left all over the room. I don't know why she's doing it. She can't be left to just roam around the house as I think she'd wake up ds and dd as she's got a loud meow. Plus, I don't want to risk her pooing or weeing elsewhere in the house overnight. I could leave her outside in the shed maybe with a cat flap but she hates the cold so that's only practical for the summer really.

She's a sweet cat and loves a fuss. We've always joked that she's not the sharpest tool in the box lol as she does such silly, clumsy things and often looks a bit blank lol

The other odd thing she started doing when we moved is just pooing in the grass. I've never known a cat to do that! So obviously with ds and dd, that's a problem outside as we're always on a poo hunt before we let them in the garden. I've also noticed that she doesn't wash herself after doing a poo either. I don't know if it's laziness but she often doesn't look clean and last night just topped the lot!... So the storm started, I let her in last night and noticed she was covered in poo, down her back, legs, sides. I don't know if the storm had scared her or what but it was everywhere. So there I was cleaning her and everywhere she'd walked on her way in.

Now I know when you take a pet on, you take them on whatever challenges it may bring but I'm struggling with this and I don't know what to do? I'm getting really anxious about ds and dd touching her mess and getting ill even though we're doing our absolute best to keep on top of it. Every so often, she jumps on the kitchen table and units and this makes me anxious as she's so messy. I always clap my hands or something to get her down straight away.

I would hate to have to rehome her over this and that really would be an absolute last resort but I'm just finding the constant mess and erratic bahaviour really difficult and stressful. She's so tolerant and good with our dc and they love her. We all do but I'm so scared about her behaviour becoming a health risk.

Please help and advise?

P. S. She's only about 3/4 so not an old cat. No known health conditions. Fully vaccinated, etc.

Did she have the run of your previous house, as if she did, I would say being shut it in a small room every night is stressing her.
I would get her checked by a vet for the pooing issues though. There might be something wrong

No, she went in the kitchen overnight in our last house which was fairly small but she was absolutely fine in there. She did have a glass door to look through onto outside which might have helped. The windows in our utility room are quite small so maybe that's not helping.

Yes, may have to try the vets although it seems like a behavioural issue.

It sounds like a medical issue to me, not behavioural at all. Especially if she is scratching herself until she bleeds, cannot wash herself, is incontinent, etc- skin infections, lethargy (not able to wash) and cat diarrehoa are symptoms of feline leukaemia for example.

Definitely take her to the vet.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 19/05/2022 12:07

what does the vet say? I assume you have tried feliway?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 19/05/2022 12:18

Vet.

Pixiedust1234 · 19/05/2022 12:27

OMG....get her to a vet immediately!! Anything to do with her leaving blood, even by scratching, is a vet thing. You would take your own child to a dr if they had the same symptoms so why not an animal??

Ringo11 · 19/05/2022 12:45

We only went to the vets recently for her boosters and she had a check over then. It's not diarrhea, an upset stomach, water infection or anything so I didn't mention the toilet issues as I assumed a vet wouldn't be interested in something behavioural but I will go back again. The scratching and blood was actually a flea allergy which is being treated but I put that in too as it's also in the room.

I haven't tried feliway though so that's idea

Poor little cat; totally stressed and not acclimatised to her new place - and closed away for at least 8 hours a night from any company.

Feliway for sure, blankets that smell of her and perhaps a different place in the house.

(Just by the way, the vets tend to be as much use as a chocolate teapot in this sort of situation).

If you didn’t mention the symptoms to the vet then how do you know it’s not a UTI?

You mention fleas, are you not regularly fleaing and worming her?

Does she have free, constant access to the outside world?

your cat needs a vet and you need to report everything unusual.

Usually a cat will only not dig a hole for its poo if it’s incontinent. The time the cat came in with poo all over her backside and down her legs…that’s definitely diarrhoea. Pooing in the rain doesn’t cause regular poo to cover your legs like that.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 19/05/2022 18:47

It sounds like there are a lot of separate issues going on here.

The toileting everywhere could either be stress or a UTI - I would lean more towards stress as it's both wee and poo, though I would still get her urine sent off and checked, just in case. Does she have access to multiple litter trays and are they in areas where she has plenty of peace and quiet?

You say the blood and scratching was due to a flea allergy so you really need to make sure you're on top of her flea treatments. My old cat suffered with a flea allergy and if we were even a few days late with her treatment, the symptoms would flare up again and she really suffered.

The mountains of hair sounds like over-grooming - it could be stress (very common) but it could also be her way of dealing with pain - hence why I would get her checked for a UTI just in case.

If it's stress,I really think you need to stop shutting her in such a small space - it's not fair on her. Cats aren't meant to be cooped up in one room for hours, it's unnatural. I would either let her out overnight (via cat flap) or give her the run of a larger part of the house. Can you somehow give her the run of downstairs while you sleep?

Sockbogies · 19/05/2022 19:40

Are you in a more rural location? It might be worth checking for harvest mites (most cats get them on their ears and aren't bothered by them, others go completely bananas).

Each year my female cat goes through the same cycle - shaking her head, itching, twitching her fur as if trying to shake something off. Dashes around, jumps up onto things, completely crazy. Eventually gets scabs over her body but worse on her head and face. She has an injection from the vet (I think it's a steroid) and that calms her and relieves symptoms.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 19/05/2022 19:53

I think you should absolutely bring her to the vet, OP. We shut our cat in the kitchen overnight because she is a menace otherwise - mithering for her breakfast from about 4am by means of hair pulling and poking us in the face. I really don’t think it is unusual to restrict a cat to one area at bedtime. Ours knows the routine and trots through to her bed when we say “beddy bed time”.

Ringo11 · 19/05/2022 22:23

Thank you everyone. A trip to the vets I think and will also look into the possibility of getting a cat flap put into our utility room.
I gave her a make over earlier today. Made sure she was all nice and clean after last night and gave her a lovely brush which she loved!
