Moving house how long to keep cat in

I'm moving house in two weeks, how long do I need to keep Ivy Cat inside for.

Any tips on how to make it less stressful for her, she suffers from FLUTD so I don't want her to be poorly. I've got a Feliway plug in, litter tray and nice bed in the kitchen. But she loves going out so she won't be happy staying in!

Pet Remedy spray is also good- it’s valerian extract.
Confine her to one room till she’s used to that, then gradually open up the rest of the house. Too much space to start with could overwhelm her.
Have 2 litter trays and make sure they are well away from her food bowl.
Probably best to keep her inside for a minimum of 3 weeks.

3-4 weeks

How far are you moving?

HumourReplacementTherapy · 17/05/2022 23:56

We moved twice last year due to insane property market.
First move kept him in for a good 4 weeks and then he just wasn't interested in going outside. Hated it would only do it if we went out with him (had always gone out before)
Moved again into permanent home 3 months later and he was out the patio doors (by mistake) on day 2. (He can't get out of the garden though he's old so sits looking wishfully at the fence for ages Grin)

Cats are pretty good at adapting, I moved with cats & they were ok at about 2 weeks. I put litter tray outside back door for scent, not sure if that’s helpful but worked ok for mine x

Definitely 3-4 weeks.

The litter tray outside thing is a myth and can attract other cats if you're not careful: www.missinganimalresponse.com/lost-pet-behaviors/kitty-litter-myth/

Sorry to hijack thread but how do you do this when one cat refuses to use litter tray, will he use it eventually out of desperation?

etulosba · 18/05/2022 09:20

I think it depends on the cat. Despite my best intentions, I managed 8 hours with one cat and about four days with another. In both cases they got out by devious means and were perfectly fine.

Is she likely to go back to our old house as its only 2 miles away. She'd also have to cross a busy road to get to it as well.

My friend's cat has persisted in going back to their old house about a mile away and also across a busy main road so I'd keep him in as long as you can.

etulosba · 18/05/2022 21:03

A colleague of mine gained a cat when he bought a house from somebody who only moved a mile away.

My cats had moved nearly 100 miles and over 2000, so perhaps less tempting to go back to their old home.

Cystease capsules are really good for their bladders, I used them every day for ours.

KangarooKenny · 19/05/2022 08:03

Mine escaped through a slightly open window (it was summer and hot) overnight. Luckily he was fine and I let them both out then. But my plan was to keep them in for 2 weeks.
