Our wee rescue cat!

Hi All,

As per the username I'm a first time (nearly) cat owner. We are picking up our wee four year old rescue girl next week.

We have been to visit her a few times and she has been very friendly, nuzzling in and purring away.

She has been recently vaxxed, neutered and chipped. We are in the process of getting everything she needs. Food, bowls, litter tray, beds, toys etc.
Does anyone have any cat tips?

Oh, she is gorgeous, ♥️ I have had 2 cats so far and both where adopted when they were 5 years old. You know what you get when adopting adult cats!

Newlychosencatservant · 03/05/2022 18:35

@Mia184 that's good to hear. Did your two settle in OK or did it take a while?

My main tip would be to continue using the same cat litter and feed the same food as she's been getting at the rescue centre, at least to begin with, to help her settle in.

PositiveLife · 03/05/2022 18:37

I've just adopted my second rescue.

I'd say give them space to get used to the new surroundings, don't worry if they find a hiding spot for a while.

Mollyplop999 · 03/05/2022 18:38

Make sure you keep her in as long as you can. I started letting mine out when I was in the garden and she has never gone far.

Oh what a cute wee kitty.

I’ve had 5 rescue cats (not at the same time, but always overlaps) and all settled in really quickly and made my house their house in no time at all.

Is your wee beauty a house cat?

Newlychosencatservant · 03/05/2022 18:46

Thanks everyone, I'll find out what litter and food she is getting just now.

The rescue said she was being kept indoors before they got her but has obviously been outside at some point so they said she might want to go out, might not!
Will she let us know if she wants out?

How beautiful, congratulations.

I'd recommend a cat water fountain. They encourage most cats to drink more, which is important because because most cats don't drink enough & are prone to kidney issues, especially as they age.

I say most, because the odd cat can find the noise unsettling, but the majority are fine & adjust. If tit doesn't work in one are, try another, that can help.

Enjoy each other

Newlychosencatservant · 03/05/2022 18:52

Ooh, never heard of a cat water fountain! (off to Google)

What a beauty, she is. She's a longer haired version of my Flinty. Keep her in for at least 3 weeks, even if she tries to get out. She'll definitely let you know if she wants to venture outside. Will you get a microchip catflap for her?

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/05/2022 19:05

You don’t need any tips, the cat will soon have you trained.

They find us easy to train with our big brains and lack of self respect 😹

iklboo · 03/05/2022 19:11

Your life as you know it is over. You will soon be a Cat Slave. Mind you, you won't care ☺️.

Newlychosencatservant · 03/05/2022 19:26

Haha, she has bewitched me already!

Re the cat flap, are they essential? Our back door is huge and almost entirely made of glass, not sure how easy it would be to get one.

Yes, there were no problems.

I got my current cat Micky after I had to put my previous cat to sleep. Micky came from a bad situation ( no organisation involved) and had overgroomed herself quite a lot. I didn‘t feed her the food she got previously as it was loaded with grains and sugar. I experienced no problems at all and Micky stopped the overgrooming immediately. The first photo shows Micky when she had been at my home for only 30 minutes - I was told that she never played before - the second picture is a recent one.

I am sure your rescue cat will settle fast and you will have a great time with her.

Aw what a wee cutie. We got a rescue cat that was just over a year old, and she settled right into the house the minute the shelter people dropped her off (she was off exploring as soon as they opened the carrier lol). She's super shy with anyone else but took to my husband and I straight away, although it took her a few months to be comfortable getting cuddles and sitting on our laps.

I'd made rules about her not getting in the kitchen or bedroom but they both lasted like a day - she spent the first night crying outside our bedroom door so we let her in and she just started sleeping on the bed which was cute. Turns out though I'm allergic to cats so that's been fun!

As long as you've got the same litter and food to start with that should keep it happy, and I wouldn't worry about catflaps or anything. Probably a good idea to keep her inside for a few months at least until she gets used to the house.

Just be patient incase it takes her a while to get used to you and the house, but I'm sure you'll get on great :)

This!

Definitely possible to install a cat flap in a glass door. No rush to get this done though, if at all. You can also put them through the wall.

Yes she'll let you know if she wants to go out. General rule is to keep cats in for a minimum of two weeks once they've moved house so they can reorient themselves by the sun.

Congratulations- she's beautiful 😊

Oh & see of your vets offer a pet club. For £20 mine cover flea & worming treatment, plus vaccines & unlimited vet consultations which is handy if you just aren't sure if something is up like I sometimes am.

Newlychosencatservant · 04/05/2022 09:59

Thanks @KittenKins

What level of pet insurance does everyone recommend?

SalsaLove · 04/05/2022 15:55

Play with her and get her a cat condo so she can climb high. She will love it!

NamelessBaby1 · 04/05/2022 16:29

@Newlychosencatservant I just got the cheapest insurance I could find, haha. Enough to cover any emergencies, but as she seemed healthy enough when we got her we didn't think it was worth paying too much! Think we're more for her Pets at Home cover (which does the monthly flea drops and annual vaccines etc) than what we pay for insurance.
