10mo cat won’t keep on bodysuit or cone after being speyed

Dcat was speyed earlier today, she came home in a bodysuit I’d provided but after about half an hour we found it still fastened as she’d managed to wriggle out.
I phoned the vet and popped back for a cone. It’s on the smallest size and seems to be the right size but she’s just managed to get it off for a second time!
I worry that forcing her back into the suit/cone might damage the wound further.
She’s not licking the wound so far but obviously is likely to.

What else can I do?

She’s like Houdini

Mine was spayed at 6 months. She wouldn’t tolerate a cone so I opted for a bodysuit. Drama Queen, I had to ring the vet to check she could walk, 10 mins of dramatics and acrobatics and they advised to remove it before she injured herself. She bit me as I removed it, strolled of as of nothing had happened and only once tried to have a go at her stitches!

Call the vet, they'll have met this before.

I wouldn't even worry about it. She will heal incredibly fast.

We are having ours done next week and I’ve already got everyone booked in for their cat watching shifts and we’ve got a huge cage to put one in if they have to be be left alone at all . I’m ordering soft collars but not holding my breath and our vet supplies a suit as part of the cost . I’m hoping they leave well alone and if we make sure they don’t chew each other that will help.

Amazingly she hasn’t been touching or licking the wound at all so just hope that continues. May let the vet know tomorrow but I don’t know what else they could do.
I don’t think the collar could be any smaller and she was very distressed by it.

You can take a wee tea towel and twist it like a chunky rope ( best way i can think of describing it) and then tie it around the neck.

  • i work in a vets. Some dont bother with their wounds. Try and be punctual with any pain meds in order to draw her attebtion away from it.
User0610134049 · 11/04/2022 19:35

Thank you
They said she should have pain meds with her breakfast tomorrow but I’ll make sure she gets breakfast early

Do you mean the tea towel by itself? And they would stop her being able to lick her tummy? I will try that but she just seems to sort of back her head out of everything

DC was released without a body suit or a cone. Talk to the vet about how they would would be with nothing. I guess it depends on how may stitches. DCs wound was tiny.

All the strays we neutered were also released after 24 hrs to fend for themselves in the wild.

SwelegantParty · 11/04/2022 19:39

I've had three cats spayed and no one even suggested a cone or body suit! They were all absolutely fine and didn't bother with the wound at all.

movingblues · 11/04/2022 19:40

We had the exact same problem about a month ago. Decided in the end that it was causing her too much stress to try and keep any sort of cone on her and left her to it. She cleaned her fur nearby but never actually licked or poked at the stitches and all healed beautifully.

CrowAndABut · 11/04/2022 19:41

My 6 month old wouldn't wear either so I left them off. She never picked at her stitches and the cone particularly made her very distressed.

When first cat was done about 12 years ago she didn't come home with anything at all.

Okeydoky · 11/04/2022 19:44

My cat wasn't sent home with anything and beyond giving it a quick lick didn't bother it at all.

Mamabananananana · 11/04/2022 20:09

@User0610134049 haha yes. You just need her not to to be able to lick at it.
Im not describing it very well am i? I have the fear youll wrap it around a few times Wink
Twirl it ( as if you were a kid going to whip your sibling hahaha) and itll be like a wee neckbrace for her. ONCE
You can use a smaller face cloth or similar, if the teatowel is too big.
Dont leave her unattended with it on.
But chances are , shell leave it

Ive had to do this to my own cat wheh he rolled in some mould bleachy spray and i was trying to get it off him

Mine had definite houdini tendencies after her snip, and managed to escape from her plastic cone, and three different body suits (she was an awkward size, to be fair). She then got her wound infected, leading to another vet visit and antibiotics. We finally got a cloth cone to stay on by tying it with very tough knots, and she did find it less irritating than the plastic one.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 12/04/2022 07:59

We never bothered and the cat healed just fine. I honestly didn't realise it was a "thing" until I read about it on here.

User0610134049 · 12/04/2022 12:56

She seemed fine this morning, wound looked good from what I can see and I’ve not seen her lick it at all.
But she has disappeared off somewhere in the house for a deep sleep (happens regularly that I can’t find her!) so I hope she’s ok and would feel better if I knew where she was! But I’m sure she’s ok; she had more painkillers with her breakfast

I'm sure she's fine :)

Most cats recover just fine from their spays with no need for any added intervention from us. I've never known a vet to send a cat home with a cone/body suit with a spay unless it was a complicated operation or the cat refused to leave the incision alone.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 13/04/2022 07:36

Mine got out of the suit/cone too as she's a tiny cat. The vet said just lea e them all off as the stitches are mostly internal and designed to stay in even if chewed. My cat was bouncing off every surface straight away. I wS horrified. She's fine now.
