Any vets? What can I give my injured cat?

My cat possibly has a sprain or break on his leg but obviously vets are closed until the morning. Is there anything I can give him?

Does your vet not have an emergency call number to phone? Ours join with several other practices to make sure there is 24hr coverage for the area. It might be worth calling them.

Lovemusic33 · 06/04/2022 22:06

They do but it often takes hours for a call back 😬, from previous experience they are likely to tell me to just keep him comfortable until the morning. His not in a huge a,Lunt of pain but just can’t seem to get comfortable.

Most vets have an emergency option, he needs to be seen asap if he might have a broken limb.

nordica · 06/04/2022 22:08

There is always an overnight cover available in every area, vets are not closed.

Do not under any circumstances give any human pain medication, paracetamol and ibuprofen are extremely toxic to cats.

You need the emergency vet.cats are very good at hiding their pain.the poor thing

Nigelladamascena · 06/04/2022 22:08

Poor cat. Please call your vet and speak to someone.

He might have a broken leg but isn't in pain? Unbelievable!

Phone the out of hours vet now!!

Lovemusic33 · 06/04/2022 22:21

He is settled on my bed. I have no childcare (single parent) so I can't take him anywhere until the morning. I obviously won't give him any medication without vets advice which is why I asked if there were any vets here. He's led on my bed next to me and ses comfortable now he's found a good position. I can take him to the vets in tue morning as soon as the kids have gone to school.

I think he landed awkwardly when jumping off the fence, he never goes far and was only outside ten minutes before returning with a limp.

He has a history of faking a limp so at first I wasn't too worried but now its obviously a bit uncomfortable so he's not faking it.

And I do know about out of hour vets. My cat was involved in a bad accident several years ago, I called out of hours vet, they took 4 hours to call back and then told me they could not do anything until the morning. They won't xray in the middle of the night and I wouldn't want him sat at the vets all night waiting.

If you can’t take to vet, can you not keep him in a cat basket to avoid further damage, if he’s on your bed he might try to jump off, I found a kitten once with a broken leg, vet advised to keep in a cage to avoid further damage by jumping whilst the leg healed.

Cats are really good at masking pain. If he seems uncomfortable he’s likely in masses of pain. You need to go to emergency vet, at least phone and ask if they have pain relief they can give you?

powershowerforanhour · 06/04/2022 22:31

No unfortunately- if he was a dog you could give paracetamol but cats can't have that. I think if he's settled just leave him alone till morning- possibly lift some food and water to his head tonight just to check he's not desperate for some, then leave well alone.

One of mine came in limping badly a few weeks ago, I phoned the vets and took him in a couple of hours later, after watching him hobble round on three legs looking very pathetic. The vet put him on the floor to watch how he walked, at which point he leapt straight back onto the table. Considering it was his back leg he'd apparently hurt, we decided there wasn't actually much wrong with him - she gave him a painkilling injection and some metacam and he's been fine ever since. Such a drama queen he is.

This is exactly what happened last time, I took him to the vet 3 times and each time the limp magical disappeared.

He slept in my bed all night but is still limping this morning, his paw is totally floppy so I think the injury is in tue joint. The vet opens at 8.30 so hopefully I can get him seen soon and get pain killers into him.

Luckily he's a really lazy cat and he stayed still most of tue night and allowed me to carry him off the bed this morning. I carried him into the garden to do his business this morning and brought him straight back in.

We have been to the vet, got there and he decided to walk perfectly fine. They think he was just trying to hide the injury and after a very thorough examination they think he may have a shoulder injury. He has a bite on one of his back legs from another cat so she thinks he may have gotten into a fight although this injury could have been caused somewhen else as he was literally only outside for ten minutes yesterday.

He’s been given pain killers and is now hiding under my bed looking very sorry for himself. We have to see how he is in a few days, if he’s still in pain on Monday then he will have a X-ray.

You need to find a different vet if they don’t provide 24 hour emergency cover (ours can x-ray day or night).

I live in a rural area, there’s a 24 vet on call but often they are covering a huge area and are usually on call outs to farms so you have to often wait quite a while for a call back. A couple years ago I had to have my dog PTS out of hours and was lucky that my local vet was the one on call and could meet me at the surgery, often the surgery is empty at night unless they have overnight patients that need caring for.
