What has stopped my cat’s chronic diarrhoea?

I adopted a lovely cat a couple of years ago. She’s tiny and the shelter told me that she has IBS and a sensitive tummy. She ha special good for it and can’t have treats.

She’s an indoor cat and her poos have always been dodgy but 4 months ago she started to have watery diarrhoea about 4 times per day and she started vomiting more often. I took her to the vets, thought an antibiotic injection had sorted her out as she was ok for a couple of days but then it started again. Tried antibiotics again, different food, probiotics etc. Nothing helped. She seems absolutely fine otherwise but she is booked in for horribly expensive thyroid blood tests later this week as the vet assumes that’s what it is.

The DAY AFTER I BOOKED THE EXPENSIVE BLOODY TESTS her diarrhoea just…stopped. One normal, solid poo every day for the past 4 days. No vomiting.

Wtf? What could have stopped it? I’ve done nothing different. What could possibly make long term watery diarrhoea disappear overnight after 4 months? Any ideas?

Cats init 🤷🏼‍♀️ Presumably you’re tied into the tests and therefore expense now? It’s just what they do, mine will devour a new food, I order it in bulk… they walk up sniff and give me a ‘what are you doing to us’ look and refuse to eat a morsel of it 😹

Could it have been TF- often spontaneously resolves.

Cat ownership 101… always expect the unexpected!

Ahhh, I wonder if it was TF. I’d never heard of that until now. The vet didn’t suggest it’s though. I don’t think I’m tied in to having the tests but she should probably have them as she’s a bit delicate. At least I’ll know either way. Standard contrary cat timing.

Hi Goodyetalso.
I'm so glad your cat is better. It's worrying and frustrating isn't it.
My rescue cat had the same symptoms from last November to February this year
Cost is £600 loads of visits, tests, injections, special food, poo samples. Turns out he had a nasty virus called Clostridium Perfringens. It was awful. I was doing the littler tray, full changes 8+ times day.The smell was vile really toxic. I was at the end of my tether, and the lovely people on here kept me sane.
One day it stopped just like that. Was odd. But such a relief. He was 5.5kg and lost 1kg in weight.
Don't know if the vet has suggested taking a sample. He also had Panacur, a strong wormer in case it was a parasite.
It's very nice when it stops!!

Did you change her food?

My previous cat had similar problems. She had pancreatitis and later on jaundice. Has pancreatitis been ruled out in your cat?

Cats do this to you. Dying one day, trip to the vets for a long acting antibiotic and pain killer shot & the next day their having zoomies and harassing you for food.

Why can’t humans have long acting antibiotic shot? Looks awesome.

Goodyetalso · 05/04/2022 09:31

Pancreatitis hasn’t been ruled out as the vet hasn’t suggested that could be the cause.

Feline diarrhoea profile sounds like a sensible thing to do. I might phone the vet today and see if they still want to do the thyroid blood tests and if there’s anything else they feel they should check instead. The vet wasn’t able to feel her thyroid gland on any of the occasions that she’s been examined but her heart rate is quite high which I know can be linked to thyroid issues. I don’t know what to do for the best for her? Still no more diarrhoea or vomiting. Seems weird after 2 years of ‘IBS’ and 4 months of really bad diarrhoea every day and pukes a couple of times per week.

She does have a tiny bit of blood in her poo most times and always has done since she came to me. The rescue told me it was normal for her and part of her IBS and the vet hasn’t been concerned whenever I’ve mentioned it (which is every time I’ve seen her).

Oh, and I tried changing her food for a week to see if it helped but it made her vomit more often so I put her back on her usual stuff which is a specialist food for sensitive tummies.

she is gorgeous!

meh... cats, they do this. mine played the 'I'm sooooo poorly' card, cost a fortune in tests to be told she liked the chicken we were feeding her (slow cooked chicken drumsticks stripped snd then mixed into in the cooking jelly) and has since been fine but refuses to eat wet cat food on the off chance that there's better stuff on offer later (spoiler... there isn't!) as long as she's eating and not lethargic or losing weight I'd be tempted to see if it re-occurs and then try and work out what caused it. you know your cat best though and if you think something's still off with her then press the vet to find out more.

Are you on mains water? When mine were kittens they picked up Campy from our well water Hmm

@Fluffycloudland77 I've always wondered why we can't have a long acting antibiotic. It would save millions of ££ and loads of beds freed up!

Toddlerteaplease · 05/04/2022 11:43

She's definitely got some chinchilla in her!

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 05/04/2022 12:45

It was the test that did it.
My cats eye infection cleared up completely the day I spent £100 on tests and medication. Before I even gave her the medication.

TheBalletCats · 05/04/2022 12:48

They’ve actually tried using long-acting abx to treat skin infections in some humans (rather than admitting patients for a course of IV antibiotics) & it had promising results…

Which is why they haven’t rolled it out yet “we need to save money, shall we look at long lasting antibiotics?” “No, let’s buy original works of art for the foyer and paint the pedestrian crossing in rainbow colours instead”
