How do you accept they've just disappeared?

It's only been a few days, but my gorgeous, big fluffy soppy cat has gone missing. He's a complete wuss and normally only ventures into the garden for half an hour before spending the rest of the day curled up, preferably on someone's lap, inside.

We've searched for hours, posted all over social media, dropped hundreds of leaflets through doors, put up posters. I just can't shake the feeling we're not going to see him again.

I can't stop crying and haven't slept a wink for 3 nights, he would always be there waiting for belly rubs in the morning, dashed to greet you when you returned home, it's just not the same without him.

My Dcs are devastated and I'm really trying to put on a brave face so as not to upset them more, but I'm finding it really hard! Please tell me it gets easier. I've had many cats before who have died from illness, or sadly been run over, but never one that's just disappeared. I think it's the not knowing that's so hard. I'm never getting a pet again, this is far too stressful!

With cats they really may have simply moved in with another family, it's easier to hope that at least. Locally a cat was found wandering near me and a Good Samaritan took it to the vet, no microchip so they put it on Facebook and three separate families laid claim none of which bought/adopted the cat officially, he was splitting his time between them!

MIL cat was found after 6 - 7 weeks. He was going into a hairdressers to keep warm and someone remembered seeing a flyer of him.
He was hanging around the local chicken shop.
Our local Facebook page is very busy with posts about missing cats and there are quite a few happy reunions.
Does he have a litter tray you can put outside and some blankets/clothes that smell of the housr?

My cat went missing. We found him about a week later trapped in one of our neighbours' houses. He went in through a cat flap set to "in only" and couldn't get back out again. They were away at the time.

I have always thought that if I lost a cat again I would go and knock on the doors of my neighbours - six houses each way - and actually speak to them. Six houses each way because that's what I read as the distance a typical cat roams. My husband found him after hearing him mowing when walking past the neighbour's front door!

I hope you get him back. There's still hope. The fact that he hasn't appeared at a vet's / with the local council is a good sign.

Lovely to hear stories of cats being found.

So sorry to those of you whose cats are still missing, it really is heart-breaking. We have snow forecast here this week Sad

OP I'm so sorry, hope you're doing ok today. Do you have the Nextdoor app in the area you live? You could try that, it seems to be really helpful in my area for people finding their cats
Thanks

I don't, but will take a look now, thanks for the suggestion.

I know it’s batshit but I’ve seen animal communicators on tv find lost cats by telepathically speaking to them.

So sorry to hear about all the cats who have disappeared - though also good to hear the stories about those who have come home again.

My cat is missing and I feel so concerned for him

One of our cats was entire and used to roam regularly. Finally nabbed him in 2017, straight off to the vet to be de-balled. Got home and he legged it...never to be seen again.

Until last week when I almost ran over him about a mile from home, I screeched to a halt and he leapt into the car, berating me loudly! Once we got home he gave my partner a filthy look, smacked a couple of the dogs and sauntered out the gate. Sure we'll see him again in 2026 or so.
