Cheapest wet cat food please

I expect this has been done before, but I couldnt see it, and prices keep changing.

pm is ok. she thakfully likes go cat which isnt too badly priced. And she will have some milk occasionally.

She eats wet food in the mornings. never more than half a tin. I did try the pets at home ones[thankfully our cat will happily eat the cheapest wet food around], but i found she ate more of the pets at home one, so I was no better off financially.

In these more frugal times, what do people recommend please? Am seriously thinking/wondering whether eg tin tuna will work out cheaper? and better for her? But is that healthy for a cat? She has alwasys been healthy and happily lives outdoors most of the time.

Just feeding tuna isn't going to give her all the nutrition she needs - canned tuna is v low in taurine, an essential amino acid that cats must get through their diet, & can be high in salt.
It's fine as a treat / small portion of diet but she needs a complete food (one which contains a balance of essential nutrents).

dementedpixie · 08/03/2022 20:08

Go-cat isn't a great dry food tbh
No tinned tuna wouldn't be better for her. Have you checked prices of aldi/lidl cat food to see if its more affordable?

Tuna isn’t good for cats, it’s lacking essential taurine resulting in health problems.
They also shouldn’t have milk. Many cats are lactose intolerant. I know costs are going up but cheapest food options probably aren’t the best tbh.

As you mentioned too, cheap food can be a false economy - you often need to feed far less of good quality food.
Large bags of complete food like Hills Adult food can be purchased from somewhere like Zooplus (they have 10kg bags for under £40), & should last one cat around 5 months.

ClariceQuiff · 08/03/2022 20:17

You need a 'complete food' - check that it says that on the tin - otherwise it won't meet all your cat's nutritional needs.

You may just need to try the different supermarket own-brands until you find one your cat likes. You don't say how old she is - check the food is age-appropriate as their needs change with age.

ItsSnowJokes · 08/03/2022 20:17

Try bozita from zooplus. A very high quality food, and it's 6.99 for 6 x tetrapacks. 1 tetrapack does 4-5 meals for our cat. So works out at really good value. Way cheaper than felix and all the other crap in the supermarkets.

BinBandit · 08/03/2022 20:31

I second Bozita. It comes in tetrapacs that keep in the fridge for a couple of days. My cat has one wet meal a day so we split this into 3 days but it works out much more food than a pouch does and as a consequence she is eating less dry food. We also get dry food from Zooplus in small size bags as she goes off it it quickly and needs a constant rotation.

lightand · 08/03/2022 22:00

ooh. Didnt think I would get this many replies! Thank you.

Never heard of some of these brands. I shall check them out.

Cat is about 9. I have lost count.

Will only give her a little tuna, from time to time.

@dementedpixie Have tried her on lidl cat food. She likes it well enough, but where I live, it isnt much cheaper any more than say tes co or whiskas for example.

Butchers classic cat food in tins is probably the cheapest, and it is also grain free.

Go Cat is less of an issue for female cats than male, but I'd probably look for something a notch up in quality, if she's not fussy you can switch around depending what's on offer. More expensive foods have less filler so you feed less, so can work out similar in price.

swapsicles · 08/03/2022 22:27

I use Athena cat food for my lot 2.25 in Lidl or 3 in Sainsbury's.simple door but sugar free,
I also give them the Sainsbury's senior cat food, small bag but cheaper per kilo than others, wheat free too.
We've had a lot less throwing up incidents on these foods, whereas before it was a daily occurance Envy
Only happens now with the odd furball and if one in particular wolf's it down!

ButtockUp · 09/03/2022 12:25

My cat developed a kidney/bladder problem on Go-cat and my vet was rather scathing about it.
He mentioned Taurine being essential too.

Gatekeeper · 09/03/2022 12:57

Claude's Bistro from Tesco also appreciated £9 summat for 40 pouches or £3 for 12

Lindy2 · 09/03/2022 13:05

Mine likes the Tescos own pouches. She doesn't particularly like more expensive brands unless they're the very posh little tins that she gets on special occasions.

She will also only eat 1 type of dry food (and will only eat dry if there is really no chance of getting extra wet food instead) which is an expensive one so that pretty much balances out her cheaper taste in wet food.

Logoplanter · 09/03/2022 19:29

How much do you currently spend on cat food OP?

I've two cats and I've been trying to watch the pennies recently and they've eaten a combination of the following over the last few months:

Athena (it's cheaper in Lidl as previous poster said)
Sainsbury's own brand cat food
Webbox
Butchers
Aldi cat pate

They are all grain free save for the Aldi one, although Aldi also do a grain free cat food but I haven't yet tried mine on it.

The Butchers works out the cheapest I think but one of my cats is less keen on it and started to turn her nose up at it. They are currently eating Athena which they both enjoy (save for the blue packet 🙄)

lightand · 09/03/2022 20:10

I dont spend a huge amount on her. £3 or £4 a week?
Thankfully no vet bills.

I am just trying to save pennies on literally every line of our budget. I think inflation will skyrocket, and I have the time currently to scrutinise all the budget.

My cat has one of those dreamies mouses. I've found that when she goes off one of her crunchie type foods, she will eat it once she has extracted it from the mouse as she thinks it's a treat Grin. She's obsessed with the bloody thing.
