I'm not sure why but he prefers to go out at night only.
He use to go out in the day for 15 to 30 mins but thus stooped. I thought maybe the weather?

However he likes to go out at night.
He usually pops out for 20 mins this extended to 45 mins. However last night he went out at 8pm and didn't return till 3am. We were very worried and he strolled back like nothing had happened.

He does sleep alot during the day.

As most accidents and fights happen at night I don't want him out at night.

Any advice on how to encourage him to go out during the day instead?

Feed him at 9pm so he’s used to coming in for dinner. Then lock the cat flap/don’t let him back out again.

Yes, just stop letting him out at night!

The joys of the teenage times! I had a few panics when mine was this age and disappeared for hours. I did also find that his pattern for going in and out changed alot as he matured.

Cats are crepuscular usually, meaning they like to go out late evening and early morning. They do their best hunting at night I guess. Lock the cat flap at night and put in a litter tray.

Lock him in. My cat enjoyed going out at night, then he came home one morning and someone had shot him in the leg with a pellet gun. He had a big gaping hole in his leg was awful. He's been an indoor cat since

My car has always done this. It doesn’t bother me.

Cats are most active at dawn and dusk, so it's his natural instinct to want to go out and hunt at that time.

The only real way to stop it is to get him in early for his dinner and then lock the cat flap so he's shut indoors overnight. Alternatively you could look into cat proofing your garden so even if he is out, he can't go anywhere.

I would look at games that help them get out their instinct to hunt - lots of flirt poles with feathers or fish on the end, those interactive games where they can chase robotic mice under covers etc.

Yep, shut him in. We did this with our cats from kittens, eventually they learned that night time is Big Sleep time. We have a Sureflap Connect catflap which you can use to set a curfew for them.

Boycat now often comes running in from outside now when I call him in for bedtime. He has the occasional night when he wants to stay out late but I track him down with his Airtag!

As most accidents and fights happen at night I don't want him out at night.

I read some research that showed that, for accidents, it makes no difference what time of the day they go out.

I’ll see if I can find it.

My lean mean fighting machine has a tendency to come back injured if he is out at night.

So he isn't allowed. Doesn't stop him trying but he isn't allowed.

It's not fun being the owner of the neighbourhood bully.

MunchyMonsters · 08/03/2022 09:26

I don't allow my 1.5 yr old out at night. She is called in for dinner at 6pm and the cat flap is locked.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 08/03/2022 09:27

One of mine goes out all day and night. He's a nightmare. I prefer him in at night but I haven't seen him since yesterday morning when I let him out!!

He has a tracker so I know exactly where he is. He just ignores me!!

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 08/03/2022 09:31

Speak of the devil and he shall appear! He's just strolled in after 28 hours

My cat is the same. Sleeps all day and only goes out at night.

VerityPJohnson · 09/03/2022 22:46

My cat is the same. Gets very lively at midnight. They feel safer prefer at night. Much worse in summer. We tried keeping him in, shouted all night and broke out the cat flap. Has calmed down a bit now he's six. Doesn't ever go that far as he's neutered and we feed him middle of the night so he comes back for that (timer bowl)
