Protection for carpet by doors?

Has anyone found any useful products to lay/stick/put down by closed doors so that the cats don't shred the carpet trying to get in? I am going to try to close more doors in the house to keep the heating bills down but know that the dcats will not be happy - they seem to think that they have a god-given right to go in all rooms (apart from the ones where doors have always been closed since they were kittens) so I need to extend our boundaries of rooms that are of no interest to them (because they are never open) but in the meanwhile need to protect the carpets. Any ideas?

Me too shredded lounge carpet. Gave up and results Eric waking me at 6 am every day for food?

We bought a cheap thin rug think about £2 from IKEA and put it under the door over the area ours scratches so he doesn't damage the carpet more. Obviously wouldn't work if there's not a bit of a gap under the door

Don't buy those adhesive plastic sheets! I did, when removed they left adhesive residue on the carpet which got grubby very fast and the cats just scratched and them Angry

It sounds like there is no solution!! At this rate I will have to put cat flaps in all the internal doors (and never put the alarm on again)!! Bloody cats!

We put hard floors down, even the stairs are laminate. Fucks them RIGHT up that does.

"know that the dcats will not be happy - they seem to think that they have a god-given right to go in all rooms"

Seem to think? YABU already at this point, obviously they do have a right to go wherever they want because they are fucking cats Wink

Seriously though, if anyone has a solution to this I'm interested. My cats are fuckers and my carpets are new (I realise IABU there myself). I've tried various "solutions" eg orange peel, scratching posts, scratching mats, different scratching posts, scratching mats you fix to the wall, doormats, thin pile rugs, catnip on the various scratching things, new toys to distract them, dreamies to reward them when I lift their claws off the carpet, feather on sticks taped to the bannisters before bed as a distraction from the lovely landing carpet...etc etc...

Cats are fuckers.

Nothing like new carpet to sink your claws into though @WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles, I bet that landing carpet was their favourite scratch pad.

We actually found the adhesive plastic carpet protector stuff worked quite well at deterring DCat but you have to change it out pretty much weekly to prevent the sticky residue on your carpet.

I laid a rubber bath mat over the carpet for a couple of weeks and the cat just gave up scratching there even after I took it away
