Pet insurance for older cat?

My cat is 15 and in fairly good health. My insurance company have just turned down a claim for some dental treatment (we pay extra for a policy including dental, but apparently the vet wrote something about her teeth in her records a few years ago, and this is therefore classed as a pre-existing condition).

We pay 30 pounds a month pet insurance for her, it goes up every year, and I have never claimed before. I am now seriously thinking about ditching the insurance and putting the money into a savings account instead. If we had done this when she was younger we would have a lot of money saved by now. And I am not sure whether I would put an older cat through a lot of medical procedures so I don't know if there is much point in paying so much money.

Is it a terrible idea to cancel her insurance? She has no other known health problems apart from kidney problems, but has special food for this rather than tablets.

£30/month over a year would only be £360 in the savings. Not much if she became unwell - it might cover a night in hospital, iv fluids and blood tests. Ultimately its up to you though.

I've recently taken out insurance again for my 11 year old cat (had to cancel original policyas became unaffordable) - it won't cover her existing heart condition or any dental treatment, but would cover her if she developed hyperthyroidism, diabetes, became unwell and needed inpatient care, had an accident.

For me, £30 a month is worthwhile - and unlike savings, there's no temptation to dip into it for other emergencies.
When the time comes to say goodbye I want to be sure, so for me that means I'd probably have diagnostic tests done (like blood tests, ultrasound etc) even if I didn't pursue invasive treatment.

Yes it is a bad idea to cancel. My cat developed health problems at 14 and required £10k of vet treatment - they were all different conditions. She would have died without treatment.
As it was she lived to 20, I was devastated when she died as she was such a darling but without insurance I would have lost her at 14.
I have my current elderly cat and kitten insured with MoreThan, they are very reasonable and always pay out but they don't do dental.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I am worried that they might find an excuse not to pay out for future treatments - so it would be safer to have the money saved.

Maybe ask the insurers if they can review the full clinical history and advise of any exclusions they will be applying, so you can make a decision whether to continue the policy. Then you will know of there's anything else they won't cover. I'm not sure they can do this, but worth asking.

Two if mine ran up bills of £22k. My premium is £137 a month. When it gets to £150 I will stop it and put the money away. The other cat is far cheaper so hers will stay!

That's a good idea thanks - I didn't know they would do that

Shock that makes 30 pounds a month sound cheap! How old are your cats if you don't mind me asking?
