Furniture scratching!

So, my darling 7 month old kitten likes to scratch everything except the scratch posts! Her particular favourites are my wooden furniture.
Is there anything I can spray the scratch posts with that will make them appealing to her?
Have tried spraying the wood with orange scent but no one has told the kitten that she isn't supposed to like citrus and I don't ideally want to spray the furniture with something chemically that smells horrible.

Have attached photo for tax Smile

I'm watching with interest! Just got a scratch post and some spray on cat nip from a pet store. Sprayed it all over the new scratch post and even placed it in front of the bit of chair she's been scratching. She's not even interested and just moved her scratching to the other side of the chair! It's very frustrating but when's too cute to tell off!

I have no solutions I'm afraid just bumping your post for you. Gorgeous kitty.

Thank you. Spoke to the vet yesterday and they said there's a feliway product that can be dabbed on scratch posts, so am going to pets at home at the weekend to get some.

Cats have habits... throwing towels & blankets on the furniture may prevent scratching & encourage her to look elsewhere...

How are your carpets doing? Grin

Catnip spray might help. We train our fosters to use the scratching post by dangling a feather toy on it, perching a few dreamies on the top so they have to climb up for them and scratching our own nails on it. Generally they realise that they like the texture of the rope better than a sofa. How tall is your scratching post? If it isn’t tall enough for them to stretch their full length up it the are less keen on using it, in my experience. Most of the posts you can buy are far too short.

Catnip spray.
Put her paws on the scratch post and mimic the scratching motion.
Try different types and material - cardboard, fleece etc.

You could try taping foil to the bits of furniture to put her off, they don't like the crinkle!

Aderyn21 · 22/02/2022 09:17

My cat loves tin foil, so she'd think it was Christmas if I taped foil to the furniture Grin
We have wooden floors and rugs and she's not too bad with those - she gravitates to the fabric sofas and the wooden furniture.
I have bought lots of scratch posts and have a couple of very tall ones, a large cat tree, some little mushroom shaped ones. Will try the catnip spray though and see if I can persuade her.

Thanks everyone

She's also got a thing for pictures on the wall - am often woken up by her knocking everything off the shelves to get to the pictures Grin

Have you tried cardboard scratchers? A few of my fosters have really liked those. One of mine only scratched on cork table mats on the floor, another only on the carpet, just beside anything he was meant to scratch on. Tried him with a carpet tile + catnip, he scratched just beside it.
I've seen people recommend double-sided tape for the sofa, that might work.

Aderyn21 · 22/02/2022 09:41

She does like a cardboard box, so that might work. I used to have them for my older cat, who just ignored them. Kitten seems to like the foam tubing that insulates pipes - she's just nicked a load out of the cupboard 😀

My old girl had a thing for wood too - but only softer woods like pine. I got her just after I moved into my first house, and literally all my furniture was pine as it was all I could afford. She absolutely shredded it. And then she moved onto the carpets - yay! There wasn't a single scratching post/box/anything that she would use, and I tried so many different types, all ignored.

Clearly, I have no helpful advice here, just some solidarity!

Solidarity is always welcome 🙂

My furniture is fine, as are carpets and curtains. Unfortunately Boycat loves wallpaper to scratch on. They have plenty of posts, a massive tree, and a flat scratcher that I attached to the wall in the middle of his favorite redecoration spot, but wallpaper is his love. At least Girlcat adores the scratcher on the wall.

I am too ashamed of the state of it now, but attached is a pic of the wall from a couple of years ago.

Mine has also tried this but seems to have grown out of it thankfully. She was objecting to me closing doors, I think. I honestly wouldn't know what to do if my cat was scratching walks like that - maybe tile the whole house?

Nope, they have free run of the house bar the kitchen & spare bedroom 24/7. Plenty of assorted toys. Excessive amount of cuddles on demand.

Very luckily, I'm not house proud & very rarely have any guests bar DSis & Nephew no. 4.
