Kittens food mad

We have 2 kittens 7 months old and they are constantly pestering for food. They constantly jump on the counters to lick plates or try to steal human food. They hoover up every crumb that is dropped. They are driving me absolutely crazy!
We've had cats before but none were that food motivated.
They get a pouch of amazon grain free in the morning and evening. They have a constant supply of dry food which they will nibble occasionally. When I feed them they go crazy trying to get into the food like they've never been fed before.
I've tried feeding them more, but they still try to get into human food.
Should I try to feed them more wet food? How can. I keep them off the counters (aluminium foil didn't work)? Will they calm down eventually? Do I just surrender and try to put away human food ASAP?

I think you’re fighting a losing battle with the work surfaces.
I would feed them more, they are only 7 months.
They may grow out of the stealing, none of ours ever did. Just use a cat safe (microwave) instead for storing food.
Our current cat will eat anything she’s worse than the dog!

dementedpixie · 20/02/2022 10:45

Do they not like the dry food?
You could try a different one.
Maybe give wet food for lunch too

Chemenger · 20/02/2022 10:49

7 month old cats are the equivalent of human teenage boys, bottomless pits for food. The last time I had one 7 month old foster I gave up on pouches and bought big tins of food instead to keep him fed. Pouches didn’t hit the sides. He was very long and slim, and burnt off masses of energy running around all day.

The first time we had fish and chips in the house with our (then) kittens was unlike anything I have ever experienced with cats. It was like a swarm...
They're still highly resistant to the idea that dining tables and worktops are not for them but are a bit more respectful.
I would feed yours a bit more wet food and see if that helps.

Do they go out much? They could be just bored silly and the only thing they have to think about is food.

What dry food do they have, and do they have water available all the time? You could always try them with cat milk as I've found that sometimes mine are pestering and are actually thirsty rather than hungry.

freeandfierce · 20/02/2022 10:50

Mine went through this stage, always hungry! After worming I gave in and fed more, think it was a growth spurt. He still checks out every meal I make though, just nosey and curious!

Thanks all! I'll try feeding more. I'm wary of changing their food though as one seems to have a very sensitive tummy and any change results in a very nasty litter box.
I'll encourage them to go out more. The weather has been shit and our older cat has some health issues at the mo and can't go out so we've blocked off the cat flap.
Fingers crossed it's a growth spurt and they will calm down a bit soon.

They have scrumbles dry kitten food. Several months ago they both had diarrhoea for months and the vet recommended just dry food. That's cleared up so we've only been adding wet food the past couple of weeks. But they still have the most noxious farts.
However the food pestering and stealing has been going on for ages.
They have a water fountain and they both drink from it.

Mine was on 4 pouches a day at that age.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 20/02/2022 14:48

I would increase the amount of wet food and change the type of dry to one they actually like.

Cats aren't dogs - if they don't like what's on offer, they won't eat, so you need to be feeding foods that they like.

Mumdiva99 · 20/02/2022 16:26

Hmmmm one of mine will have days when she would rather starve than eat the dry food. But it's the same dry food I give them every day (they actually have a mix of 2 dry
...the really expensive teeth food recommended by the vet and a better quality although cheaper dry food). She has to eat the dry because of her teeth....if i gave more wet she would eat that instead.
So if your cats have a plentiful supply of dry food that they do eat then that isn't the issue.

Do you have someone that feeds from the table? We do....I'm looking at you my DH.....I caught him breaking off a bit of brie last week to give a cat....so no wonder mine are always after our plates....

Can you play with them before you eat so they are tired and sleepy when you get food out .....a laser pen making them run all over the house, a toy on a stick dragged up and down the stairs. My cats play chase with my daughter - they run and she chases.

Apart from that just shut them out the kitchen at meal times.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/02/2022 16:29

I’ve found the trick with my adult girl and dry food is to give less than you think. When I do this biscuits are LIFE.

If I give a generous scoop biscuits are DISGUSTING.

This is, of course, totally normal and not completely batshit.

IsItTooHotInHere · 20/02/2022 16:34

You should try feeding them more of the wet food. Ensure it's high in protein. Otherwise, give them cooked chicken/turkey/fish. No bones.

GingerPCatt · 20/02/2022 20:01

I wish I could shut them out of the kitchen. Bloody open plan!!
I'll try giving more wet food and see try to tired them out. I think they have been a bit bored lately.
