Our lovely ginger cat has been knocked over tonight. Dp has taken him to the emergency vet but it’s not looking good.

He’s only 6.

We have a 3 year old who loves him if the worst happens how do we tell him?

Fuckssake he’s such a good cat. I can’t even remember if I’ve stroked him today.

I tube fed my cat after she had pancreatitis. It was easier than tube feeding a baby. (I'm a paediatric nurse) the tube was covered by a bandage and she left it alone. I didn't have to do it long as she recovered quickly.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/02/2022 11:27

However she is an exceptionally docile Persian, who would sit on my lap while I did it. Not sure how cooperative a real cat would be!

Final update from vet - he’s coming home later today.

Wire not necessary and he can also drink by himself which is a relief. So I think he will be on a diet of kitten milk and wet food - I’ve only ever known him to eat gocat biscuits so will see how he takes to it (he’s a vane bastard who likes seeing himself on the box)

He’s had inconclusive head and chest X-rays - possibly the images were unclear but hopefully some cage rest and painkillers will see him through.

I’m off out to get wet food, kitten milk and a litter tray 🤢 if anyone can advise on the best options for soft food I’d appreciate it.

Gourmet pate is good or any tray food mashed with a fork. He’s coming home and that’s the main thing.

Wolfiefan · 18/02/2022 12:45

Kitten food is higher calories and small bits. Could mash it.
Lik E Lix always go down well. Fairly sure they are meant as a treat not a complete food.
Hope he recovers soon.

Avoid the "fast food" for cats which are the whiskas and felix's of the world. They're very popular but full of bulking agents and he'll need good nutrition to heal

Something like James wellbeloved, harringtons, lilys kitchen and blink are all good quality. Basically look at the labels and the top two ingredients should be meats or fish etc and the percentage of those should be very high.

Good luck and please give his ears a rub from me 💞

Gonnagetgoing · 18/02/2022 12:47

Oh bless him - such a lovely cat and only 6!

Gourmet pate, tray food mashed with fork, Lik E Lix ad maybe chicken mashed with rice.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 18/02/2022 12:48

Really pleased that he's coming home so quickly. Fingers crossed for a rapid recovery.

Gonnagetgoing · 18/02/2022 12:49

If you can going forward be careful how/if you let him out. If near a busy road maybe consider a catio.

And also consider pet insurance going forward - saved my bacon many times! Tescos and Sainsburys all do cheaper options or you can just save the money you'd spend in separate savings account for it.

Gonnagetgoing · 18/02/2022 12:50

Ps - fingers crossed he recovers well! Smile Flowers (for cat!)

bobbythevet · 18/02/2022 12:50

Oh I'm glad he's ok(ish)!

How about tuna? The owner of my local cattery says he's never had a cat turn it down.

bobbythevet · 18/02/2022 12:50

Tinned tuna that was meant to say

SuperSocks · 18/02/2022 13:22

Oh I am glad he's home! Poor little boy, he must be feeling so rough. High quality kitten food blended with kitten milk to make it a 'slurpable' sort of consistency? Bless his heart. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Roselilly36 · 18/02/2022 13:47

Aww pleased he’s home, the very same thing happened to my tabby boy quite a few years back, he was missing a tooth, but his jaw didn’t stop him, we had him until he was PTS at 18yrs old.

viques · 18/02/2022 14:26

So pleased he is coming home. He will do so much better in familiar surroundings.

Moneypennysfreedomfund · 18/02/2022 14:36

Oh am so glad it’s looking a little more positive and you will have your cat home. Just so worrying for you all, also trying to make sure your little one doesn’t become over enthusiastic with the ‘ nursing’ and upset the patient…

Really crossing fingers for you and yours, we love our pets so much don’t we…..

Panda368 · 18/02/2022 14:53

£1800 later and the worlds most expensive moggy has arrived home. He’s clearly off his face on morphine and has an undignified patch shaved into his side but seems otherwise ok.

OP posts:
RishiRich · 18/02/2022 15:28

Well done kitty. Did he bring the morphine home by any chance? Grin

Panda368 · 18/02/2022 15:54

I think we have some ibuprofen for him.

He looks a bit funny and glassy eyed at the moment.

He’s decided to camp out in the carrier for now but he has popped out for a wee at least. We just need to see what he makes of the fancy cat pate I’ve bought for him.

Bless him. I'm glad he's home. He's bound to be a bit off for a while.

My little dog had a nasty jaw injury as a pup. She's 10 now, and still well and happy. She recovered very quickly. There's only a very slight mis-shape from where it happened, but really only I can see it.

Fingers crossed for his quick recovery and a long and happy future. He's very lucky to have such a decent and loving family to love and care for him.

Very best wishes to you. x

zafferana · 18/02/2022 16:17

Aw, that's a good update OP. I do hope he's okay - he's such a gorgeous boy and only 6. I'm sure your DS will be delighted to see him home. Get well soon ginger kitty 😻

NextThreadPlease · 18/02/2022 16:27

Aw, poor baby. Glad he’s going to be ok. It sounds like he’s been a very lucky cat be home the next day after being hit by a car. Our friends cat was hit by a car and was in the vet for almost 2 weeks and the cost was much higher. As he was only £200 within your budget of being PTS, please consider get him insured, he’s only 6 and could have 15 years ahead of him. Hope he continues to make a good recovery.

Pudmyboy · 21/02/2022 20:47

Just found this thread: how is your lovely kitty doing?

Panda368 · 21/02/2022 21:00

@Pudmyboy he is doing well thanks.

A bit wobbly on Saturday morning when I found him asleep curled up in the litter try next to a poo - which definitely isn’t very “cat”.

He is gradually getting back out to the rest of the house but seems a bit stiff/sore. Eating and drinking pretty perfectly if quite dribbly.

He took himself outside to pee earlier as he seems to find the litter tray quite upsetting so I think he’s going to make a full recovery.

I do hope so OP. Keeping everything crossed.
