Where are all the kittens?

I’m keen to get a kitten, but I just want a moggie, not a fancy pants pedigree cat.

Years ago, people would advertise their kittens for free or next to nothing on the notices in pet food stores, ads in the local paper etc but this doesn’t seem to happen any more……..

I’m not expecting a kitten for free, but I don’t want to spend £100’s on a cat……..

20 years ago, my ex MIL’s cat had kittens and they gave them away via a notice in the local shop………

I know I’ll be told to rescue, but the hoops you have to go through and you’re still looking at close to £100 in adoption fees…….

I have 2 kittens, £80 each from CPL. They were neutered, chipped, wormed, defleaed and checked by the vet to ensure health. All that would cost you over £80

Checks were virtual

My youngest two are from a local farm - we paid £10 each to cover the cost of their food.

If you really don't want to rescue or go through private ads it's worth looking for farm litters.

@JurgensCakeBabyJesus Well you were unlucky with that rescue, and their policy seems very OTT. Many rescues, including the one I'm with, would certainly home to you.

And the reason any kittens available privately at the moment are very expensive is simply supply and demand. We are out of season. Kittens won't be in huge supply for another couple of months. So the few that are around now are expensive. In a few more months there will be so many people won't be able to give them away.

@2holibobssofar I totally get what you mean. As a child we had a kitten who was from the litter of a stray cat found by a school friend. Then lately I got my last cat from a colleague who's cat had kittens. (I posted on here when he sadly past away in Dec )
I am looking for a new kitten and finding the same . The local rescue only homes in pairs and not keen if you work fill time. But my last cat had a lovely life going out in the day time or sleeping lots and snuggling with us when we watched TV in an evening. I am sure he was happy .
I would like to get a kitten from a family home but as pp have said online you don't really know whether the claims in the ad are genuine.

I dunno about private sellers.
My kittens came to me from CPL with all their jabs & vouchers for free neutering.

What a tremendous bargain for whatever I paid to CPL... £70/cat?
I feel guilty for letting them pay for the spaying. Easily costs £125 per cat if I paid privately. 2 jab initial course would be ~£80/cat alone.

Try another rescue - the RSPCA let us adopt a single kitten (although we had an older cat). Kind of wish we'd got two though as he could have done with someone to playfight with - my ankle suffered!

Rescue kittens are often fostered in homes - I fostered a mum and six kittens - so they are often used to being in a home.

We found a small local cat rescue and I paid £50 donation. However she needed her jabs and spay so that cost came on top. People are so much more aware to get their cat spayed now which is a good thing but it does mean no more a friend of a friend or notice in the local shop type of kittens.
Really most rescue deals are very cost effective as they often include the spay etc.
Facebook often has local cat rescue sites if you search.

Dont give up. Just keep checking. I got my Dolly as a kitten from CPL and it wasnt an issue. They were brilliant. My friend also adopted from Mayhew a single one. Although I prefer them in twos it is easier.
