6MO kitten crying to go out ALL the time.

So my kitten is spayed and jabbed and has been accompanied into the garden on many 30 min jaunts. Whereupon she has galloped straight into the pond and fallen out of the tree in quick succession.
She seems to be sensible in staying in the garden area and it is a safe quiet neighbourhood.
When/how do people decide to just loose the beast? I feel she still needs some watching as she’s new to the world of outside (see pond and tree).
She’s also doing my nut with the constant yowling to escape.
Any advice?

Oh bless her! I’d let her out. As long as she stays in the garden. Can she easily get out of the pond if she ends up in there again? (although lesson likely learnt)

Uses she can escape the pond! I suppose I’m just worried she will go too far into neighbours and not know how to get back.

She's lovely. When I let loose mine it was as during spring when I spent most of the day doing gardening. It meant that for about 4 hours I was in the garden and the cats could have a look around further afield. I brought their food and water outside and periodically called them back so they could practice where to come home to. They would come back and lay in the sun and having a drink.

Can you cat proof your garden and come we the pond with mesh?
Our mob are contained in the garden so come in and out as they please.

Cover the pond: weird predictive text.

Start letting her out one for 5 minutes, then 10 minutes, then 15 etc....Call her back each time and treat her - so she knows if she comes she gets treats.

(Also get a ladder, a chair, lots of patience, welly boots etc etc For when she is stuck up a tree and you have to call her down very slowly, she is stuck and you try to get up to reach her, she is on a neighbours fence and another car is stopping her Coming home etc etc!! They are a worry. And there are often some comedy moments.)

This was the heart stopping moment my husband saw yesterday. I was so pleased to be home and miss it.

How long have you had her ?
There used to be old advice that said to keep a cat in the house for 6 weeks or so until they knew it as home before letting them out.
Once they’re out I don’t see what you can do about it tbh. Hard as it is to let them go.
I used to jingle keys and give my cat a treat. Which set my mind at ease because I knew she would come running whenever she heard keys jingle. She did this up until she died,

Yes it’s not a great time of year for being out with her but I do go and sit and freeze. She will come to the rattle of the dreamies usually. I just don’t know what’s to leave her alone. I suppose if I watch from the kitchen and then go out every 10 mins to make sure she can see me. I’ve scattered some of her litter around the edges of the garden don’t know if that helps.

Our vet said most accidents are to cats under a year. Our cat was the same as yours and I gradually increased time outside from about 7 months but I had a few scary moments as they tested out physics/gravity. I found training our cat to a specific noise of having a tasty wet pouch of food given to them (normally on dry kibble) meant that getting the cat in was easier.

Blogblogblogblog · 12/02/2022 10:41

Ah I see great minds think alike and you use food bribes already!

I’ve had her for 6 months now and she definitely knows us and the garden and back door. A loud plane scared her yesterday and she ran to the door. She does not quite get the cat flap yet and I’m leaving that for a bit she knows I will open the door.
The pond is only small with lots of bricks in the bottom so she can’t drown so that’s ok.
I caught her when she fell out of the tree but it’s not a massive tree.

I just thought I’d lost her and was running round the garden shaking the pouch and I heard a miow from inside ! She’s just taken herself in through the flap ! It is cold and windy I think she just decided she’d had enough. I’m so pleased.
I like the key jangling idea as I fear she knows the treats mean going in.

@Mumdiva99 I would die if I saw that sight Grin they can usually get themselves down safely but sometimes they do stupid things so there is always that chance they go for a jump!

@ilovebagpuss I would have had the sofa cushions out, and a large sheet held out like an emergency catching thingy (can't think of the word for it....) - But I wasn't home and she got down. But it's windy today so I would hate her to do it again.
