Cat sisters constant fighting ,do we have any options left

Hi all we have 2 cat, sisters, they were rescue cats and told they had to stay together. We had then ages around 6 months and had them for around 5 years. Over the years the one who is quite a nervous car is beating the other up. Over the past few months it's become quite bad and her sister is covered it cuts and wounds. She's also having the odd accident in the house too. Nothing has changed at home in the last year. Normally we're in to give them both lots of fuss treats they go out when they want. We're really worried about our injured cat and she just seems so down, sleeping lots, hiding and obviously injured. They have lots of places they can go separately but it still happens. I feel dreadful and really wondering whether to make thr heartbreak decision to split them up. I've been thinking of asking friends or family who may be prepared to take one but its breaking my heart. Is there anything I can try!?! My vet bills are going to bankrupt me and I'm worried we'll go out one day and she'll get an even more dreadful injury

What’s in the cat’s best interest?

Annon12345 · 06/02/2022 18:35

@Kenwouldmixitup difficult because she's very very well loved here, we adore both of them but she's become so unhappy recently and spends most the day sleeping or avoiding her sister so I think maybe she'd be happier in a home as the only cat

I don't want to appear dramatic, but before your cat is killed, they need to be split up with some urgency.

Cats rarely intend to fight to the death but the wounds inflicted on your injured cat could kill her. Infections can turn nasty very very quickly - cats mouths are filled with bacteria and so bites can turn into abscesses which can turn septic.

Please do the right thing and make them both happier and safer.

@fairylightsandwaxmelts you're right. It's heartbreaking we didn't want to do this but I do feel like it's in their best interest, I've contacted the cat rescue we first had them from for help in looking at rehoming one

One of them has to be rehomed.

We homed a cat in this position. She had a lovely, calm life. It was real joy to have her and she was adored.

Cats are flying out of rescue centres. If you need to rehome your DCat, she will find a good home via a rehoming centre and will be snapped up. In fact, you would probably keep DCat with you until the suitable home was identified. We homed DCat via Blue Cross. They were great.

Sorry Op. Can see you have contacted a centre. You’re making a decision in the best interests of your DCat. Putting their need front and centre. Star

Sounds like it would be better for your two cats to be split up / one rehomed, as much as that hurts you.

I always thought it was cruel to have only one cat but I now know that not true. I had sister cats who were ok together - sometimes they'd curl up together but there was always an edge to any affection. Then one died, and I can't believe how much happier and more relaxed the other one seems as an "only".
