I think I've broken my cat

He is such a fussy bugger when it comes to food but I've got into a bit of a mess.
The only food he would eat for years was Tesco pouches, only chicken and turkey, only in jelly not in gravy.
Then something changed when they changed packaging and he went off them. Since then we've limped along as he would eat felix (again only poultry and no gravy ).
Now he's gone off that. Actually TBH he will eat the chicken pouches which is only three out of twelve in the box.
Until very recently his sister would eat the others as less fussy, now she's turning into a demon to feed.

We've literally tried every bloody food on the planet.
I think I've made it worse by removing the food if he fusses and try another pouch.
We've just had to take about 40 pouches to the cat rescue cos they're not getting eaten.
So now he is just pestering me constantly and walking around all forlorn telling anyone who will listen how absolutely starving he is.
They always have good quality dried food down which he will, very begrudgingly, take a nibble at. So don't think going all dry will work.
In the past I resorted to buying frozen chicken breasts and cooking them fresh each day, even then he turned his nose up at the freshly cooked meat so that's a no goer.
Have I broken him by pandering to his fussiness?
He is just like DD2, they will happily live on chicken nuggets if I let them.

Any ideas or advice welcome 🙏

I give mine Athena cat food, cheap but no crap in it, suits them all the best and no more throwing up! (Apart from hairballs obviously!)
I get mine from lidl or sainsburys

It's. No to tuna or anything fishy alas.
They take it in turns to take a mouthful and are generally on good terms. I have tried feeding him when his sister is out but then she'll come in and ask to be fed and he'll (when he eats!) have his share of hers.
I used to have them into a routine of breakfast lunch and dinner to the point they would know when it was food time but I (we) got lazy and fed them on demand.

That's him sitting on DDs lap. He'll happily sit like that forever!

NO!!!!!
Are you not aware pitons food is making many cats extremely ill due to change in the recipe

Look it up

I was aware of previous recall of foods - we had some Sainsburys Hypoallergenic Range we had to throw out.

I've seen thread on here referencing a facebook group which did seem extremly biasis and seem to have issue with both felix and purina.

I did ask our vets in December when we saw then for annual check up and while they did take opportunity to try and sell us the range they sell they said weren't seeing any issues themsleves.

Our cats are in very good health despite having wet from both felix and purina - though I do try regualrly with other wet foods and they have a mix of high quality dry food.

I have got them on better dried food but wet has been difficult so far.

But if OP tried them and it's not worked - fair enough.

girlinleeds · 04/02/2022 13:27

We had to switch cat food after the issues with applaws/sainsburys dry food last year, turned into a nightmare one of our cats is gluten intolerant so we have to be careful anyway. Our big cat went on hunger strike and lost 1.5kg whilst we struggled to find food he'd eat. Eventually he decided he will eat morrisons grain free trays of food, and only that. means I bulk buy it as I dread the day we run out and they don't have any, as been a few times and they haven't got any

BrioLover · 04/02/2022 13:35

My fusspot likes Lily's Kitchen. She generally only eats the dry food and then I have a few pots of their pate in the cupboard for her extra fussy days.

BrioLover · 04/02/2022 13:36

Lily's do a trial pack too which was good!

drivinmecrazy · 04/02/2022 13:49

Thanks everyone. We've ordered the Katkin so will see how we get on.
Although it might be a hard sell to DH at £48 a month for one cat let alone two !!
Think I'll skirt over the price and wait to see if he'll eat it then DH will have no choice but to pay up 😂

Oh, he is so beautiful!!

Good luck with Katkin (and your other attempts!). Have another cat who is also incredibly picky and his preferences switch between meal times. 🙄 it's enormously frustrating because he never eats more than a few mouthfuls in one go!
He will currently only eat certain flavours of the tinned gourmet pate range. Or cheese. Any cheese.

You also have to mush his food up for him as he is far too important to chew(!)

drivinmecrazy · 04/02/2022 13:50

And he'll have to forego his beer shelf in the fridge to make way for the cat food.
Oh dear he's really not going to be happy is he 😆

you'll need a freezer drawer for the Katkin too! I have one fussy bugger who won't eat wet and who has settled upon Royal Canin Gastrointestinal dried food at £45 for 4kg Hmm following a bout of the squits and her sister who will eat most things if they are deemed expensive enough (Tesco- nope, Aldi- nope, Felix AGAIL extra gravy- at a push, Katkin- yum, applaws- yum, lily's kitchen- bites your hand off for it! Grin)

TheDogsMother · 04/02/2022 14:04

Well there's your answer. He's a gorgeous fluffy demi God whose main job is to keep you all guessing. Hope the new food works out OP

CassieJumped · 04/02/2022 14:19

Maybe try warming it slightly?

drivinmecrazy · 04/02/2022 14:23

As for warming it I don't think I could bear the smell. Surely it stinks??

OP posts:
Susu49 · 04/02/2022 14:28

To us, maybe! Cats are triggered by smell though which is why stirring food they're ignoring can encourage them to eat it again rather than be given more.

We only heat katkin for 9secs at 800w, it takes the chill out of it. It's also much more like real food than cat food.

Susu49 · 04/02/2022 14:29

Katkin pouches take up v little space too!

throwawayafteruse · 04/02/2022 14:34

I would take away the dry food and put a good quality meat wet food down. I use Bozita. Mine was fussy as anything and would only eat the jelly off food and have a handful of biscuits.

I took the dry food away and now she wolfs down two boxes a day of decent food.

OwBist · 04/02/2022 14:43

Mine likes the Republic of Cats stuff - wet and dry. They also do a 2 week offer, so not so bad if they don't like it, but it's not cheap after the 2 weeks. Mine hates Purina, Go-Cat (same as Purina?), Arden Grange, raw and the insect-based stuff (tried for an experiment). Ate Royal Canin provided by the vets after surgery.

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 04/02/2022 15:01

My dcat prefers begging for vegetables..
He is an odd boy indeed.
He sits at the table with a plate to himself every night...
Peas, broccoli, cauliflower and asparagus. Is should that be asparapuss?

I think I've broken my cat
drivinmecrazy · 04/02/2022 15:10

Susu49 can I ask with the Katkin could I vary them with 'normal' cat food? Would certainly keep the cost down if I order for one cat to split between the two and supplement with other stuff.
I really do like the look of Katkin though the proof will be in the eating.
One thing Cas will be happy with is the box they come in, he's a sucker for a box or a carrier bag so even if he hates it it's not money down the drain

hellsbells99 · 04/02/2022 15:41

My cat will currently only eat Aldi vitacat mousse food - which is a pain as I often get a click and collect from Sainsbury’s to make life easier.

Susu49 · 04/02/2022 15:51

I suppose you could, only been using it a few weeks myself. I don't see why not!

They advised doing half and half for the first couple of weeks to allow cat to adjust as I think some cats can get a funny tummy if their diet changes too quickly.

Susu49 · 04/02/2022 15:51

@Easterbunnyiswindowshopping that's amazing Grin

Mumsnut · 04/02/2022 15:57

You haven’t broken him

He’s broken you.

In other words, he is catting properly
