Do we adopt this cat or not?

We are due to adopt a cat this weekend. He is a lovely affectionate little boy who climbed on my lap immediately and purred loudly. However there were 2 cat litter trays and the rescue said once he has been in his litter tray he won't use it again if it is dirty until it is clean again and had been going on the floor when he had just the one tray.. Having 2 or even 3 litter trays isn't a problem but we were honest on our form and stated we did not want to rehome a cat that regularly uses the floor as a toilet. Also one of the reasons we decided to go for a cat over a dog is because we didn't want to be a slave to dashing home straight after work etc like we had to be with our lovely rescue boy dog we lost a few months ago.

What would you do? He is so adorable and we will scoop extremely regularly and straight after a number two but would this be enough?

I am just about to go into work but will reply later

OK so we got him this morning and here he is. I know no photo means he doesn't exist. He was on the sofa purring his head off within 10 minutes. He seems to prefer dp which is typical as dp has never had a cat and doesn't consider himself a cat person but secretly he seems to be a this cat person. Cat seems to like to sit with his paw touching us when he is next to us though dp has gone out now and cat has retreated to the top of the sofa and appears to be sulking Grin No cat litter usage at all yet but he knows where they are so time will tell. Thank you for all the help and encouragement- so far so good

He looks very relaxed considering he's just arrived in a new home. I hope it goes well.

Cheeseandlobster · 05/02/2022 12:28

He is incredibly relaxed considering he has only been here a couple of hours. Here is another photo

That's one chilled cat, looks gorgeous

LiveFromNewYork · 05/02/2022 12:35

Wow he’s settled in quick, love a mini panther.

Will he have outside access? That would probably solve your littering issue. My cat doesn’t like litter trays at all.

Otherwise you might find his behaviour changes once he settles since he may just be feeling insecure. Cats bury their poo to ensure predators can’t find them.

ihaveonecat · 05/02/2022 12:45

I have a black rescue cat Grin and he is the most affectionate boy who settled in the first day
Mine only poos maybe once a day so it's not really an issue with cleaning IYSWIM
I would just have two trays and make sure he knows where they both are

sluj · 05/02/2022 12:56

He's gorgeous - congratulations 🎊

Cheeseandlobster · 05/02/2022 17:43

Still no poo yet. He had a wee earlier though. And he drinks lots of water. Is that normal? He met dp's adult daughter and her husband earlier and was totally unfazed. In fact he sat in the middle of all of us and basked in adoration Smile

What a confident cat!
Hope he's very happy and good at toileting for you.

The world is full of men who arent cat people and yet can be found with a cat draped over them. Our cat preferred dh but switched sides, previous cat was a mommy's boy from the start.

Cat tend to have big drinks.

Very True Smile

New cat had a good first night. He came to bed for a cuddle then retreated to sleep on the sofa. Dp went to work earlier this morning and said there was something in the litter tray that didn't look like a poo but was large. We have been using clumping litter so perhaps the poo has finally landed!

And he really is the ideal cat so far. He only scratches his scratching post and the door mat, eats all his food, sits on his little heated pad on the sofa and always seems happy to be with us, either on our laps or close by. And he discovered his toys this morning too

Sounds promising. I've been waiting for updates about his poo.

I really need to get a life.

StickerPlace · 06/02/2022 20:10

What a perfect chap.

So settled already and seems such a good boy.

Keep the updates coming. Really happy for you and more for your new family member to have such a nice new home. X

My cat will use the litter tray but sometimes his bottom isn't above the tray. It doesn't happen very often and I still love him even though I don't love his poo

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/02/2022 20:26

Yeah their all well behaved at the start. After a while it’s more “yeah, I do this now”.

Cheeseandlobster · 07/02/2022 10:26

The poo landed last night. All in the tray and scooped out straight away. We had roast chicken last night which he seemed very enamoured with and tried to insert his paw onto our plates. Then at bed time he decided to lay in the bath and watch the leaky tap. His character is definitely coming out!

He sounds an amazing cat

thecatneuterer · 07/02/2022 11:15

Yay for the poo landing! One small step for a cat, but one giant leap for Dcheeseandlobster cat :)

Cheeseandlobster · 07/02/2022 14:21

More poo this morning Smile He really is such a little love. He won't come to bed with us sadly but maybe that's a good thing really as we won't have paws in our faces at 4am. He is laid on the sofa currently fast asleep and making the cutest noises. So far so good!

Any tips for getting rid of cat litter smells without emptying the litter every day. We have clumping litter and scoop out the clumps regularly but there is still a slight smell. We got him a lidded tray yesterday with a cat flap so this is working to some extent.

Sounds like it's going great.

Re smells - did you read my suggestion posted on this thread last week?

Lifeisforalimitedperiodonly · 07/02/2022 15:09

We use World's Best Cat Litter (we have the lavender scented).

Oh no but if you don't have him sleeping with you then you won't get the paw in the face! Mind you, you still might when he realises where you are. I bought this and framed it as it made me laugh!

Yes, the flushable litter is brilliant. I would shut him in his own room at night unless you really don't want to sleep again.

I did Smile I have been cleaning his tray out as soon as its dirty and showing him I have done it. He doesn't seem to like woof chip litter though so we have gone for sani cat clumping
