Getting cat spayed

We have an indoor cat. She's just 6 months and I've realised that she is in season / heat now. She's really unsettled and is making such a funny noise such loud meowing like She's in pain.

I hadn't realised it would start this early . So need to contact vets to get her spayed.
Is this a big op for a cat? Will she be in a lot of pain after? How much does it usually cost?
Feel so sorry for her She's just not herself

It’s not a big op. Ours recovered really quickly. They bounced about once anaesthetic had worn off. Ask vets re cost.

Wolfiefan · 02/02/2022 22:50

Oh and be bloody careful. She will be desperate to escape the house.

PeacheyPeach · 02/02/2022 23:04

@wolfiefan I know she's been constantly at the windows all day , we have a male cat next door aswell 🙄

It's advised to spay/neuter at 4 months as they can become fertile from that age

thecatneuterer · 03/02/2022 09:02

Yes it should be done at four months ideally. It's not a big deal for the cat and they don't appear to notice anything has happened. Some vets put them in cones afterwards and some don't (we don't). That will make the biggest difference to how she reacts. Average cost around £70 I think in private vets. There is a nationwide shortage of vets (Brexit related), which is worse in the South, so you may have to wait for a while to get an appointment.

In the meantime make sure all doors and windows are securely closed as not only will she be desperate to get out, but all the neighbourhood toms will be trying to break in.

PeacheyPeach · 03/02/2022 14:21

Thanks all x have booked her in for her operation so she doesn't have to go through this again. We are on window and door watch now especially as I read somewhere about the local Tom's getting in. I'd be so upset for her if she got pregnant. She's so little 😭

Incidentally if a cat does get accidentally pregnant there is no obligation to do through with the pregnancy. A spay/abort can easily be done up to a cut off gestation (which will depend on individual vets).

hi, I just got our cat spayed a few weeks ago- she was 6.5 months approx, and had just gone in heat for the first time a wee bit before. She went in at 8.30am. I got a call at 10am to say all was well (but vet says she is fat - the nerve!) and I collected her at 3.30pm. She was a bit woozy at first, but fine. She had metacam for a week afterwards, and didn't bother at her stitches (she has scar on her left side, and a big shaved patch). She was honestly back to normal the next day and jumping around and eating loads. She is currently sitting on my window sill eyeing up all the starlings and seagulls!
