Do you clip your cats claws?

I've been looking online for tips on what to do to stop my cat scratching my furniture and saw somewhere that it said cut their claws.

I was just wondering if anyone does this and if it stops damage to furniture?

Also if you do how does your cat feel about it? I really think my cat wouldn't like have it done.

@ButWhereDidTheWindComeFrom

Ours have a favourite scratching tree outside. The older cat also likes to leave a fair bit of her claws and some of her teeth behind in the dogs' various legs and ears.
Have to say though- I made the mistake of trying to medicate WindyCat a few days ago while wearing my pyjamas and no bra. She got her claws STUCK underneath the top AND the skin of my nipple. That was pretty hideous.

Just needed to share. (The neighbours heard my scream from 3 blocks away i am sure)

I've always cut my cats claws from when they were kittens. I use standard nail clippers. It is not cruel, the vet will do it for when you have them health checked. Arthur just stands still while I do it.

He is an outdoor cat, but for some reason, still gets really long nails, possibly because we live in the country, and it's all gardens and fields, not so much pavement and roads. He clicks around on the wooden floor, and gets caught in clothing, so they get trimmed every month, just like he gets de-flead every month.

He doesn't claw furniture though, he has a scratching post, and also loves the front door mat. Seems to keep him happy.

Mine gets done regularly usually at the vets because he's a hairless cat so can cut himself scratching if we're not careful. There's zero distress involved...... declawing however is cruel and outlawed.

ihaveonecat · 01/02/2022 16:21

Yes, the vet does them for me
His back ones have to be done as he only has one tooth so he can't bite them
He doesn't go out much and is lazy with his scratch box!
Doesn't hurt them

PossiblyPertunia · 01/02/2022 16:25

Indoor cats and we cut their nails every Sunday! Only thing that stops them ruining the carpet. Mine do not use scratching posts though, only carpet.

Inastatus · 01/02/2022 16:26

Yes we trim our cat’s claws. They do have scratching posts but their claws still get too long. We just use nail clippers and they are completely unfazed by it. DDog also has her toe nails done by the vet when she has her check ups.

PicklePied · 01/02/2022 16:31

No because I value my skin remaining intact

And also because it's not necessary

jugglingjobs · 01/02/2022 16:33

So I just cut my cats claws and she was fine about it, I'm shocked Confused she isn't a lap cat and doesn't easily let me do things she doesn't like, I actually get more of a fight from her when I try to brush her fur!

Now I feel like a bad cat mum because I wonder if she might have been uncomfortable with her claws, as they were very long. I only took a tiny bit off as I'm not sure how much to cut and I don't want to hurt her.

A youtube video said just cut it where the claw begins to narrow abit, I really just cut the tips off do you think that is enough?

No, our cats go outside and need them to be able to climb and defend themselves.

We have a scratching post right next to the sofa. The side of the sofa that they were scratching the most has some clear, removable scratch guards pinned to it as well. Between these two things they no longer ever scratch the sofa.
I also found that putting a coir doormat outside the entrance they used the most also helped. They love to give the mat a good old scratch before they come in which means they're less likely to do it in the house.

CovidCorvid · 01/02/2022 16:34

Yes, not distressing for the cat at all. He seems to quite enjoy it.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/02/2022 16:51

Yes. I have too as Cheddar makes biscuits on my face and it hurts if her claws are sharp!

Toddlerteaplease · 01/02/2022 16:53

I once tried filing them and she loved it!

ISpyCobraKai · 01/02/2022 16:59

Just one of them as she had a toe removed and her other claws get uncomfortable for her if left because they grow at a weird angle.
She doesn't like being held to have it done, but is obviously more comfortable afterwards.
They all go out so I don't do the others or Tripod's other two paws!Grin

Allergictoironing · 01/02/2022 18:16

Indoor cats here. Never need to do Girlcat's claws, she keeps them neat and trim. Boycat is a different matter, have to do his every month or so. I think it's partly that he forgets to do them, plus they just seem to grow more quickly than his sister's.

They have a nice tall scratching tree, and I recently got a scratch board to attach to the wall above the sofa which Girlcat LOVES - she can stretch full length from the back of the sofa. It was actually bought to give Boycat an alternative to the wallpaper, but he won't touch it and still scratches off the paper all around it. And at the top of the stairs. And by the front door (sigh)

WutheringHeights66 · 01/02/2022 18:19

I snip the older cat’s claws as she sharpening them outside these days is harder as she’s getting a bit arthritic. Only the ends and not near the blood supply. I once had an older cat whose claw grew into her paw pad so I’m very conscious now.

If you are clipping them to stop scratching you are fighting a losing battle.

SeagullSong · 01/02/2022 20:03

I do mine in the winter when they go out less but they don't like it. I know it's time when I can hear the claws clicking on the floors as they walk around.
Not tried the sofa scratch pad but I have a similar one around a table leg that they both ignore.

DontKeepTheFaith · 01/02/2022 20:43

No chance.

As a new cat owner, I merrily bought nail clippers a few months ago but our 4 year old rescue had other ideas and it just ain’t happening! I would need about 4 pairs of hands and some chainmail gloves🤣🤣

Dcat does go outside but only in to the garden and is not a climber. Her claws do get stuck in my crochet blankets and she does occasionally use our carpet as a cat scratcher Iit’s normally the bedroom carpet at 3am!

She uses cardboard cat scratchers a lot.

NewYearCalavicci · 01/02/2022 21:02

I am the only one that has a cat that chews uts own claws ? My daft cat sits in the oddest positions to nibblel them .

He is a indoor cat and allows me to sit on his scratching post ( aka the sofa)

CheshireChat · 01/02/2022 22:41

ButWhereDidTheWindComeFrom aaaargh, that's horrendous Shock.

NewYearCalavicci cats claws sorta get shedded so he's probably trying to speed up the process. No need to trim them if he's not getting them snagged on the carpet or furniture.

jugglingjobs just the tips is fine, better do it more often than hurt the cat and then struggle to get her to let you try again. You can usually see the blood vessel inside the nail as that bit is darker and you need to stay well clear of it. My cat has one claw that needs to be left distinctly longer as she's clearly unhappy if I try to trim more of it.
