Opinions on Waitrose cat food?

I ask because I have a John Lewis voucher which can be used in Waitrose and a somewhat fuusy cat. He normally likes Whiskas but that is rising in price so I wonder if it is worth the effort of going to a Waitrose (£4 bus ride) and using the voucher there? it needs using before end February and I don't want anything for myself. But as you all know cats can be so choosy so do not want to waste time and money if he won't eat it. Of course all cats are individuals but does anyone use Waitrose own brand with good results for their cat? Thanks for reading.

My Bengal boy wouldn’t touch it. Waitrose deliver for £3.

@Fluffycloudland77, Thanks for replying, I typed a reply but lost my internet connection. It's difficult to know if they will take to something new or even continue with the old. I had a special offer on whiskas from amazon in December which he liked at first but the last couple of weeks he left more thann ate. Fortunately that is all used up now, hence my wondering how to use my gift voucher for the best.

I would imagine. If u went all the way on the bus. Spend time doing all of it. Any wouldn’t touch them. Grin

My cats food has been out of stock for weeks now ( anyone els found this?) he has had to have a replacement and oh boy do I know he is unhappy.

Exactly, it'd be different if I was passing the supermarket anyway and could try a pouch or tin first. I am not living in the country or something and in fact my closest food shop is M&S! Tried their food last year, he would not eat that .

Waitrose senior in jelly is MrCat's favourite! But it has been out of stock for weeks.

MrCat is gradually coming round to eating other wet foods, but he leaves most of each pouch and eats more dry food instead. I know dry food is not the best thing for an older male cat, so I'm toying with the idea of giving him Waitrose food aimed at younger cats.

I used to work for Waitrose over 4 shops the own brand cat food sold better than most branded. I do not however know who makes it etc. Some of the larger shops seems small individual portions so you could try it out that way?

Waitrose do foil trays for cat food at £1.60 but they have been out of stock for ages. They were one of the few options that our cat would eat.

@Dilbertian that’s interesting. Did ur vet say that about older male cats. Mine is 13 this year. And I always try and get dried food in him. Maybe I shouldn’t?

I think I may have got that from this board. Or maybe I just knew it? I'm not sure. It's something to do with how much they drink, and also the grain content of dry food, IIRC.

Dilbertian · 30/01/2022 15:37

Or I could be completely wrong!

I need one of the expert Catminions of MN to point me in the right direction.

I don’t see my cat drink a lot. But then he goes outside so who knows. He prefers wet food. But he does eat the dry I leave down all the time for him. It’s so hard to know what do. He came in today with blood running down his face. In the end only tiny cut. But man. They really worry u.

The question of eating dry food is another reason I want to sort out what wet food to buy next. Even with the food he likes and only giving half a packet, my cat will often leave some and eat more dry food. He has noticably put on weight and I admit to giving more frequent snacks as I have been at home all the time. He does drink quite a lot of water and I would say it's a good plan to have some avaiable at all times as they might drink when you don't see them. Also the drinking bowl is on the other side of the kitchen to food bowl as I read somwhere cats prefer that if possible.

Dry food can be a problem for boy cats due to the grains causing blockage of their pee pipes - an expensive problem if it develops and can also prove fatal if not spotted (and cats mask very well).

Obviously, grain free dry food exists as well as special urinary versions which I would recommend but if they're having a mix of wet and dry, I wouldn't worry too much - just keep an eye on them, especially if they're getting on in years.
