Cat has hurt her paw… I can’t see how she will let a vet look?

She’s 16. Usually fit and well. But this week holding her foot up like on tip toes. Over the week she has let us touch and check hip and knee and ok so think it’s her paw. She hisses and wails if we go near. I can’t see how she will let me pick her up to go to the vets or even if I get her there she won’t let a vet touch? Any suggestions?
I’m assuming she’s jumped and hurt it on landing or I rolled on her in the night….

Vets (& especially vet nurses) are very good at safely restraining and examining reluctant patients - most cats don't sit still for something like a blood test, for example.

If she is really stressed and resistant, she may need to be sedated to examine & treat it properly - but your best bet is to book in ASAP for a consult.

Could she have an ingrown claw? Those can be incredibly painful and elderly cats are very prone. Vets are used to dealing with fiesty cats, but if she's still too much for them then they might have to sedate her to have a look.

Oh, & to get her in the carrier - do you have a top-opening one? They are far easier than front entry carriers; your vets may even lend you one if you leave a deposit (we did this when I was a receptionist).
Burrito kitty with a towel and put in as swiftly as possibly.

It is literally a vet’s job to assess injured animals - I’m sure they’ll have dealt with far worse than your cat.

They act different when in a strange place, especially the vets and seem to just keep still and then go back in their crate.

A vet will be able to manage

It’s so annoying as I was at the vets for her booster just two weeks ago. I will try look while she is asleep. She is currently hiding under the bed… not even been out for a wee today

Put the carrier in a corner and herd her into it or drop a towel over her and put towel and all in as one unit. Let the vet worry about the exam. We're used to otherwise-placid cats turning into savages when they have a cat bite abscess or other painful bit.

Custardpudding · 26/01/2022 21:47

Thank you for all your help… I just need to find and get her out from hiding under the beds! She just won’t let me touch her today which is why I was concerned about even getting her there!

My cat once needed a vet and two nurses to pin her down at the surgery. She was fine and yours will be too Smile

Our cat had to have Gabapentin two hours before her vet visit as she is a feisty thIng. We still couldn't get her in the cat basket, had to put her in the dogs crate! My ed had such deep scratches the vets gave her a note to give to her gp should she need to get antibiotics!

A trick that may get her out from under the beds is to flush her out with a hairdryer. Girlcat used to hide under the bed if she realised it was vet visit time, quick blast with the hairdryer at her & she'd scarper downstairs.

Little sods always behave for the vets. They’ve got cat muzzles at ours anyway which reduces the chances of being bitten.

I drove ours there crying my eyes out as he wasn’t walking and he walked fine in the vets. Got home and couldn’t walk again.
