One cat or two?

So we lost our old cat last week. The 2yo cat is walking round the house yowling (he’s a house cat). I’m worried he’s missing her. I’m worried he’s lonely (he does get on well with our dog though).

He’s a really friendly, laid back boy. I think he’d like some company but I’m also aware that a lot of stuff I’ve read in the past says cats are happy being solitary. I don’t want to get another cat if it stresses him out but also think if I am going to get another doing it while he’s young and interested in playing makes sense.

Some cats love other cats, some cats hate them, and some aren't fussed either way. Yours obviously doesn't hate them so if you were to get another one (that is definitely a cat-loving kind of cat), then the worst that is likely to happen is that they just end up sort of rubbing along together. And in the best case they will be best friends.

2.... Or 3...

Santahasjoinedww · 22/01/2022 17:37

When we lost 1 his db was depressed.. Dkitten solved that VERY quickly.

CovidCorvid · 22/01/2022 17:43

Yes, I think I’d be more likely to get a kitten as I think this will be less risky.

I agree.... another young cat so he doesn't feel threatened.

One or Two?

Two more

RonCarlos · 22/01/2022 17:56

My one adult cat became two when we adopted a stray. We fed them in separate areas for ages and after a while they just started hanging around together. I love that they have company, although they are both independent too. The outdoor one 'calls for' the indoor one sometimes, and when I let him out they go off and sit on the patio together.

thecatneuterer · 22/01/2022 18:04

I wouldn't get a kitten. Kittens are just 'too much' for adult cats very often and they piss them off. I'd get him a young adult that has been shown to love other cats. A rescue will know which those are.

Dcat was 8...
Dkitten 8 weeks..

One cat or two?

Not long after...

One cat or two?
PerrinAybara · 22/01/2022 18:33

We had two cats. Cat1 doesn't like other cats much and would probably have been happy solitary. Cat2 loves the company of other cats.

We now have cat3. Cat2 and cat3 have bonded and are often curled up together. Cat1 continues to ignore them both.

So I'd vote for another cat or two.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 22/01/2022 19:44

Definitely multiple cats! We originally had one and I'd never do it again - we have three now and they get on so well together.

I wouldn't go for a kitten necessarily as they can be really boisterous and irritating - maybe a calm adult who's generally cat friendly?

CovidCorvid · 23/01/2022 14:19

Well while out cycling today I stumbled upon a nest of feral kittens. Couldn’t get near them. I have Facebook tracked down the person who’s land they’re on. She’s aware they’re there and two days ago was asking on FB if anyone wanted a kitten. Sadly someone has responded and is meant to be getting them this afternoon. I’m keeping fingers crossed for a no show!

One cat or two?

I don't know where you are in the country but this needs dealing with properly and the mother trapped and neutered. If you're anywhere near Liverpool or North Wales try Freshfields rescue. If you're Greater London/ Essex pm me. Anywhere else google rescues and also try Cats Protection.

CovidCorvid · 23/01/2022 14:31

Nowhere near those areas but the woman who’s house they are near says she’s got a trap and will be getting the adult female spayed.

Oh, that's great.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 26/01/2022 14:53

I think it really depends on the cat. If he's used to company he may get on with another cat. My elderly cat who died last year hated other cats, she was very happy as the only cat.
My new cat hates being the only cat and was miserable while I was at work, The neighbours said she spent the day glued to the window waiting for me to come home.
So I got her a kitten and they are as happy as anything.
