My cat just fell into a bath that was 54 degrees!

He didn’t become fully submerged but his legs and neck are very wet. He’s hiding under my bed but he will eat dreamies. Do you think he will be ok?

I have no idea what temperature my bath is but I do know they've fell into it and the toilet several times and been absolutely fine.
Towel dry as much as possible and then they'll spend hours washing themselves all over!

Arucanafeather · 20/01/2022 21:38

If the bath was too hot for you to feel comfortable submerged in it then you must call your vets and get your cat checked out.

CoastalWave · 20/01/2022 21:40

Erm emergency vets now.

Christ.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 20/01/2022 21:42

I presume you mean Celsius? That is hot.

If he wasn't in there long, he may be
ok but I'm not a vet. He's probably shocked but keep an eye on him and get him to a vet if in any doubt at all .

Dutchesss · 20/01/2022 21:43

That's hot enough to scald, he will need to see a vet urgently. If he was in and out very quickly then there's hopefully not any internal damage done.

Greenbluestar · 20/01/2022 21:44

Ok so I’ve managed to get him out of the bed. I can’t see any redness or blistering so I’m hoping his fur has protected him. He’s munching on tuna so appetite certainly not effected. I always thought cats refused to eat when in pain so hopefully a good sign.

I can’t get him to vets when he is hiding under bed, can I…

I would have thought it would be obvious if the cat was injured
Certainly wouldn't be eating dreamies. As long as eyes and paws aren't red I wouldn't worry. But I'm laid back about most things and wouldn't put a cat through the trauma of a vet visit unless I really thought they needed it.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 20/01/2022 21:48

OK, I just looked it up. Ignore my previous comment. It is above scalding temperature so personally I would take him to the vet or at the very least phone them for advice.

I hope he's ok.

Do you normally have your bath that hot?

No. I put the hot in first then add cold as it runs out very quick. Going to phone vets.

Google says it'd take a human 17 seconds to get first degree burns at that temperature (no idea if what I looked at was reliable information). Not sure how this would translate to a cat but might give you some frame of reference?

Seemssounfair · 20/01/2022 21:51

I would take to vets now for a check over and pain relief.

And turn down the temperature on your boiler, 55 degree water can cause 3rd degree burns in seconds.

Lougle · 20/01/2022 21:53

Poor cat! I hope the vet is reassuring.

Paperyfish · 20/01/2022 21:55

My kitten did this when she was tiny. Quick trip to vet- but they said she was fine. She hid under the bed too.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/01/2022 21:59

Poor cat. I think the hairs hollow and acts like a lightening rod conductor to the skin.

When mine burnt his paw on the hob it looked fine but all the skin peeled off and I felt like the worlds worst owner (I put him outside to cool it on the cold slabs).

I hope your little guys ok.

showmethegin · 20/01/2022 22:02

Definitely vet. If cats hide its often because they are in pain

JohnnyEyebrows · 20/01/2022 22:04

You've not got kids have you? Anyway I shan't lecture you about running the hot first but it's a disaster with young ones around

I'd call the vet for advice and explain it all to him or her and take it from there

WeAllHaveWings · 20/01/2022 22:04

At least call the vet just now for advice...

Sexnotgender · 20/01/2022 22:04

That’s very hot.

I couldn’t get in a bath over 42/43 without being in pain.

PigletJohn · 20/01/2022 22:13

somewhat off topic, one of the ways to reduce steam and condensation in a bathroom, is to run some cold into the bath first, then add the hot. This will also reduce risk of scalding to any person (or cat) who gets in during the filling.

If you use bath foam, and put it in before adding the hot, it will reduce steam still more, as well as adding an insulating layer to reduce heat loss.

I hope your cat jumped straight out.

Greenbluestar · 20/01/2022 22:42

Vet said we are ok to watch him based on his behaviour now and the fact he was in there for a second max so unlikely to have caused damage. He’s eating fine, and he’s been playing with his laser pointer toy so hopefully got a lucky escape. Thanks for advice. Here he is enjoying his yogurt.

Beautiful cat op. I love gingers! 2 of my 3 cats are ginger

Yummypumpkin · 20/01/2022 22:48

Twat cat. Mine did this. He was so angry with me!

I trued to towel him down.

He got madder.

His pride is hurt.

He will NOT do it again.

thequeenoftarts · 20/01/2022 22:49

Okay so hopefully by now you have phoned the vets. My fear would be your cat got scalded and will go into shock from the fright. I would think vets might admit for pain relief, fluids and overnight monitoring
Hope the cats ok x

WhatsitWiggle · 20/01/2022 22:51

Aww, love his paws, he looks like he's dipped them in white paint.

Glad he's ok, reckon that's one of his 9 lives x
