My lovely 6 month old long-haired rescue is having the snip on Friday.

Aside from dropping him off at 8.30am (about 30 mins drive away) & picking up mid-afternoon, I'm not sure what to expect.

Think he might be hungry/thirsty straight after, but worried he might be sick in the car on the way home.

Any hints or tips?

My cat was fine, just a bit out of sorts

Mine have all slept the day away after we've been picked them up and then been 100% back to normal the day after Smile

It's such a minor operation for them, apart from being a bit wobbly I'm not sure mine even noticed Grin

That's reassuring - thanks!

I guess it's a more significant operation for the lady cats.

He's such a playful boy & I can't imagine him being still for long afterwards.

All he'll want to do afterwards is sleep - they're wobbly and sore when they come home.

But the next day you wouldn't have any idea that any of them had ever had surgery - they were all zooming around like mad things Grin

As you say, it's more of a major operation for females but for males it's really so minor they barely notice it.

I'm not sure mine realised anything had happened. He slept like a log and ate in between but aside from that he was oblivious.

Mo1911 · 18/01/2022 21:22

Mine was snipped last Friday. He came home having tried to escape the carrier, zoomed round the house and ate the dogs dish of food, followed by three sachets of his own and dry food too. He literally never stopped until we went to bed around midnight. He was obviously using up all of the energy he hadn't used up while he was at the vets. He's never missed a beat.

Bettybantz · 18/01/2022 21:26

Lol Mo, so did my boy!! Absolute maniac. The vet said to expect him to be subdued but he was really silly 🙃

TroysMammy · 18/01/2022 21:30

Haribo was like a nutter, he didn't read the memo about being subdued. My Vet recommends steamed chicken or white fish post op.

Our DCat (m) is going in for the snip next month. Do boy cats need a "cone" to stop them licking the stitches?

Mine didn't have stitches, he's a hairless cat so it's really easy to see!! I reckon his "scar" is probably about 3-5mm, absolutely tiny, and I assume it was glued. He's never looked anywhere near it.
JamMakingWannaBe · 18/01/2022 21:51

This thread has been really reassuring. Thanks all.

ChangingStates · 18/01/2022 22:01

No cone, no stitches, there are two tiny incisions on their testicles. I was told just to check them to make sure they had healed ok and also recommended to keep them indoors for 24 hours to try and minimise chance of them over exerting themselves and not healing. Both kittens were fine in themselves though

Quick question - did anyone notice a difference in the smell of their male cat's urine after neutering?

I thought there could be a difference?
