My cat is ravenous!

Hello, long time cat owner but stumped by this one.

We have 2 male cats - ages 9 and 10 and both domestic shorts. Both cats are a normal weight and so I am loathe to increase food supply when I think they receive the correct amounts for their size and activity levels.

The slightly younger cat ("N") is prone to worms and both cats are treated monthly, by prescription strength spot-on (combined with flea treatment.)

N has, in the last 3 weeks or so, become insufferably hungry all of the time. He is constantly begging and bothering everyone for food. He seems to have lost all interest in anything apart from food, barely even venturing outside except to toilet.

He has no other symptoms. His diet has remained unchanged and consists of 2 wets feeds per day with supplementary access to dry food and water throughout. He has Republic of Cats wet food and Whiskers Senior dry.

I don't think his water intake has increased but it is difficult to tell as he also drinks outdoors.

We moved house around 6 months ago and there are no other houses very nearby (very rural) so I believe it is unlikely that he has had another family or food source which has been cut off. Since the move, he has been very settled. Naturally, we kept him indoors for the first 2 weeks and we have had no issues whatsoever. We have outbuildings and he is a keen mouser... or he was.

N has neither lost nor gained any weight. His fur is still glossy and he still cleans himself regularly. He isn't lethargic, glassy eyed, sad or otherwise displaying any negative behaviours. No injuries and no previous health problems of any kind.

I read online that spot-on combined flea and worming treatments are not very effective at treating tapeworm (although they do work on ring worm). I telephoned the vet (they have his weight on file) and popped in to pick up 2 x Droncit tapeworm tablets which have since been administered and haven't made any difference. Except that I am now covered in cat scratches. 😂

He doesn't have a litter tray but I know where he goes. DH took a walk up there (it's on our land but a bit of a mission and I'm pregnant) and couldn't find any tapeworms in his poo. (Sorry this is a bit TMI now) so I think we have ruled this out.

Do you think it is now worth taking him to our vet for a check up? I'm wondering if he may have diabetes. Unsure if "doctor doctor, my cat is... hungry" is actually a thing. But it's a definite and sudden change in his behaviour that I just have a bad feeling about. Call it mum-tuition. But about a cat. 😅

N really hates: cat carriers; car rides; and being touched by strangers. So vet trip is really a last resort.

Has anyone ever had a suddenly very very hungry cat and what on Earth did you do about it? Am I crazy for taking him to the vet!?

One last thing, both cats have PetPlan Life Cover which includes ongoing treatments if required so no problem with affording treatment.

Thanks for reading.

Signed,
Desperate and Scratched.

I had this with a cat with overactive thyroid so it's worth a check up if it's a new problem. Our cat was stealing toast from the toaster

I hadn't heard of this before but I'm Googling it now. Thank you for the tip off. I think it has made my mind up about taking him to the vet asap.

Yes, mine got like this and it was her thyroid. Now on medication for life.

thecatneuterer · 18/01/2022 13:49

I was also thinking thyroid. Glad you'll be going to a vet. On an unrelated matter Whiskas dry is terrible food. As with all cheap dry food it's high in magnesium which is related to urinary crystals and blocked bladders in male cats. It's also generally just a bit shit. Can you switch to something better? Really go by price. Anything that costs more should be better. For example James Wellbeloved, Arden Grange, Lily's Kitchen or even just Iams.

Yeah, I can buy the stuff but he refuses to eat it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ He's the boss around here.

Hi again folks. I really wanted to post an update in case anyone searching the web for similar stumbles across this and it encourages them to get their own cat checked over.

We took N to the vet about a week after I first posted. He wasn't displaying any symptoms but was still frustratingly hungry all of the time and we just had a hunch something wasn't right. His thyroid, blood sugars and other bits and bobs were checked and all normal. Sadly however, his heart didn't sound quite right and he was sent for some additional tests.

Cut to the chase and N has heart failure. He can't be saved but he has been started on a few medicines to make his last few months comfortable. Even the vet commented on how remarkably asymptomatic, bright eyed, and bushy tailed he is.

We've been told that N will live around another 2-6 months and will pass suddenly and without any pain. So now we're just on a mission to spoil him rotten and try not to cry every time he meanders into a room and gives us his characteristic slow blink.

The vet thinks his hunger is just simply a change in behaviour and potentially linked to boredom as he has not been going out stalking the local area in his usual way.

Sorry that my update is so miserable. I would never want to worry any other cat owner unnecessarily but please do make sure you get your "hunches" checked out.

I'm so sorry to read your sad update about your lovely cat, @peeache. I'm glad that at least you know and so have the opportunity to make his time with you as special as possible, and that he won't suffer when his time comes. But it must be terribly upsetting.

Yoyokitten · 12/02/2022 10:50

Oh I'm so sorry PeaAche.
That's very upsetting news.
I was just about to post that my 19 year old cat had the same symptoms, and hers was also thyroid problems.
The only consolation is that he will not be in pain, and animals don't know the future and live in the moment.
Take care
