Leaving dry food down

We have two gorgeous kittens. 5 months old now!

With our old cat we would just leave a constant supply of dry food down and he'd just eat whenever he was hungry.
Can I do that with 2? Or will the competition mean they just scoff the lot immediately?

They always seem to be starving and desperate for their food at meal times.

I do that with my two. There's no competition - they just graze on and off all day but it is causing a problem because boy cat is overweight, but if I take the food away, tiny girl cat won't get enough. It would be much easier if they ate it all in one go.

I have 2 and leave dry out. They graze on and off all day

I have 5 and leave out dry. No arguments here.

Kittens should be fed as much as they want. Once they stop growing though it often leads to overfeeding especially if you just keep topping up a bowl and don't know how much they eat.

Cheap dry food is also really bad for cats - brands like Go Cat are just carbs with a tiny amount of meat derivatives.

We have three and leave a bowl of dry out all day. There's never been any arguments over food and they're all different ages/sexes.

Leave dry food down 24/7, but feed wet stuff 3 times a day as well. Obviously, ensure there is always clean water to drink. I had 3 cats at one time, didn't have any bother - the 3 each had their own separate places for their food

I also have two. Both grazers.

kittymum234 · 15/01/2022 20:45

So it should work.

They have royal canin kitten, which is fairly good I think - at least the rescue centre recommended it... and it's not cheap.

@nordica if I fed them whenever they wanted they would be sick. They are obsessed

I have 3. I leave two bowls out of dry biscuits. They don't fight at all.
You'll be fine with one bowl I only have the extra as my boy is really greedy. Grin

kittymum234 · 15/01/2022 20:51

I'm a bit worried one will just gobble the lot as soon as I put it down though!

Depends on the cats.

Every time I have had 2, I have had one guzzling bully and one self regulating grazer.

Current solution is that grazer has dry food in a microchip feeder and guzzler has meals only at mealtimes.

Guzzler still recalls the happy week when we didn't notice the battery had failed on the microchip feeder and she could eat herself into oblivion.
