Am I feeding enough?

Sorry, another question about my new adoptee!

Inexperienced cat owner, 3.2kg 4 year old female cat, had her 10 days. Seems quite thin.

She is eating everything I put down, but meows a lot about seemingly nothing so not sure if she's still hungry.

I've been trying her on different foods and I now feed her in morning a Sheba Fine and Fresh 50g wet pouch and 20g go-cat dry food. Same in evening. I know for her weight it should be 150g wet food or 45g dry food a day, so I'm potentially overfeeding.

Just wanted to check In haven't really misunderstood the amounts I should be feeding her. It doesn't really look a lot. Maybe I could give her half a pouch in morning and the other half in evening, along with the dry food?

Go cat is not a good food as its low in meat and high in cereals
I leave dry food out (I don't weigh it) and give wet a couple of times a day

Allergictoironing · 15/01/2022 13:21

Many cats self-regulate, mine do. So they get their small amount of wet twice a day, but the dry is down 24/7. They tend to graze on both throughout the day and night.

You could try that for a bit, at least until she puts the weight on. If she then starts to get fat you could reduce the amount of dry or use a low calorie one

MyQuietPlace · 15/01/2022 13:23

She's hungry! Give her 3 pouches of food daily, and leave good quality dry stuff 24/7 (don't measure it out) with a bowl of water to drink. My cat has 3 pouches of Felix or Purina, but the dry food is SCRUMBLES (Amazon) and he's got access to that all the time. A couple of times a week, I replace one pouch of food for some cooked chicken and/or tinned tuna in spring water.

Had cats for 42 years

dementedpixie · 15/01/2022 13:24

It's thrive dry and encore dry I give my two boys. Both high meat and grain free

Naranjo · 15/01/2022 13:27

Ah ok thanks all. I'll try the Scrumbles and leave it down all day. I knew GoCat wasn't the best but didn't realise it was that bad.

Or Thrive...off to amazon now to order.

On the side of the Whiskas pouches it says to feed my cat 2 pouches and 15 g of dry food over the course of the day Wink

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 15/01/2022 13:30

More if she's thin
Mine is the same weight and I feed natures menu, he eats as much as he wants so sometimes 2 pouches, sometimes 3 or 4 a day

dancemom · 15/01/2022 13:35

My cats get half a pouch each three times a day and their dry food is down constantly. They get a few dreamies when they come in from their walk and some days they share a pouch of cat soup or a tube of the yogurt treat too.

Boy cat is 5.5kg and girl cat is 3.5kg and they are fussy eaters, they only eat fish cat food, only in jelly and turn their nose up at fresh chicken or fresh fish 🤷🏻‍♀️

dementedpixie · 15/01/2022 13:48

I tried scrumbles but the kibble was really small compared to thrive/encore and the cats preferred the bigger pieces

The Whiskas pouches are the only thing she has point blank refused to eat (the rescue gave me some as they said that was what she was eating). I saw that 2 pouches/15g recommendation on them - the pouches are 100g though so bigger than the 50g Sheba pouches I'm using.

They do raise their standards once the paws are under the table. Has the vet said she’s underweight?

In 7 cats I’ve only had one who couldn’t self regulate food so I feed them what they want. Much missed Bengal boy was on 4.5 pouches plus a bit of dhs evening meal, current 5kg girl is one 85g tin of gourmet and Arden grange biscuits, about 30g?. Plus 9pm dreamies.

Beamur · 15/01/2022 16:12

If

Beamur · 15/01/2022 16:14

I'd try her with free access to a good dry food and a couple of pouches a day. Food with a higher protein content will make her feel fuller longer. Many cats don't tolerate food with grains either, it's not something cats need really.

Hugasauras · 15/01/2022 16:18

Yep, better food will probably help. There are lots of good cat foods on the market that are high meat content and not packed with fillers.

I use allaboutdogfood for my dog but this looks similar and includes cats: petfoodexpert.co.uk

Beamur · 15/01/2022 16:20

It's a good idea to keep her diet the same as she had in the rescue when they first come home and then introduce new brands over a few days.

Naranjo · 15/01/2022 17:07

Thanks all for your advice. No, the vet didn't say she was underweight.

She is farting rather loudly so a good idea to get her off the grain foods I think!

Another milestone tonight, managed to pick her up for the first time Smile Did wonder even a few days ago if I'd ever even be allowed to stroke her, let alone pick her up.
