Questions about kitten food

I've recently become the proud owner of a 6 month old kitten.

I've been feeding him the same food he had at the rescue centre - 2 pouches Whiskers a day plus dried food.

I'm not very happy about the plastic waste with pouches - when I had 2 cats they shared a tin of food, and when old cat was frail and picky she had an individual 70g tin a day (which was expensive, but it kept her happy) which could be recycled.

I can't find tins for kittens in the shops, but I've seen you can order European brands - there are a couple of I think Scandinavian ones that look affordable. Half size tins, so one per day, so better than the single portion ones?

My questions are:

Has anyone used similar and would recommend? I think they are called Smilla or Bozitta?

They don't seem to have much of a range of flavours - basically just chicken or veal (I don't like the idea of veal for welfare reasons so would be just chicken).
Is this a bad idea and will cause fussiness later? Should I be trying for more variety?

Are you looking on zooplus? They have a wider range than the supermarkets

I would much rather buy tins for my kitten, like you have found them hard to get, but have settled on pouches for now-we recycle ours with plastics at our local supermarket.

Desert76 · 12/01/2022 17:52

Yes, Zooplus, those seemed the cheaper ones, but you have to order lots to get free delivery, so worried kitty will go off them and I will have wasted money.

I didn't realise you can recycle pouches, so will definitely look into that.

I recycle mine at the local big Tesco.

They have a section for recycling pouches/crisp packets, etc at my local tesco

Pets at home have some tins for kittens too.

Desert76 · 12/01/2022 22:05

I will definitely have a look for recycling facilities next time I go to Tesco!

I didn't see any tins in our pets at home when I looked, they didn't have much kitten food at all, but perhaps they were waiting for a delivery.

I was told once my girls were spayed to stop buying kitten food anyway

Kitten food has its own section in my PAH.

The vet told me to give my two kittens (who are both 6m old) adult food now they are neutered.

I buy tinned from Sains for the recycling reason too.

Desert76 · 13/01/2022 08:19

That's interesting Wolfie and Trekker.

He was neutered when he was at the rescue just before I got him but they implied he needed kitten food until he was one.
He isn't his full adult size yet, I don't think, he's just over 3kg (and loves his food, he's a bolter not a grazer).

Normal cat food would certainly be easier, but maybe he'd feel hungry.

I think I swapped to adult food around 9/10 months and my boys were neutered at 4 months
