How much does your vet practice charge just for a prescription?

Old cat needs Loxicom, had consult £40, and 15ml of Loxicom was £27.

Shocked.

I asked how much they charge for just a prescription, so I could buy online.
£19 !!

I'm hoping if I get the prescription I can buy more than 1 lot? Cheapest I can find is about £11 for 15ml.

Is this how it works, that I can get the prescription but stock up. The prescription lasts 6 months. Again not sure if it can be used multiple times in that period.

To be told at reception they can't get it from their suppliers as cheap as online really bloody annoys me.

They charge £27 for a bloody thimble full.

I know I should be thankful that's all dcat needs ATM but what a rip off.

Well ironically the vet wrote the first prescription for 6 treatments and the second two were for 2 treatments each. I couldn't afford 10 treatments so only got the 6 and didn't even use the 2nd and 3rd prescriptions. Flea treatment, by the way with a long shelf life.

I know my post was asking about prescription charges.

But £27 for 15ml Loxicom.

Why are others on the thread paying less for the med.

When I can find the time I'm going to ring a few vets in my nearest city/big town and see what they charge.

Honestly OP @fairylightsandwaxmelts charges are well below average. Maybe you can clarify fairy what the metacam was? An injection or bottle? If it was a 15ml bottle then your vet literally loses money on that.

Orarewedancer · 12/01/2022 13:33

Others will pay less, others will pay more. Same if you buy literally anything anywhere - prices are different for a variety of reasons

thesunwillout · 12/01/2022 15:26

Agree that was a low price.

15ml bottle Loxicom

It was a bottle of Metacam - for 10 days worth of daily doseages for a 5kg cat. They charge even less for injections!

@bigsigh2021

The pharmacy can dispense the prescription. I didn't say anything about prescribing.

BigSigh2021 · 14/01/2022 09:01

@DeathMetalMum

Sorry, when you said that the pharmacist "filled it in", that sounded like someone was filling in the information on the prescription, which they wouldn't do if just dispensing.
