Counting my cat's breaths

Hi
Does anyone know
Can I count my cat's breaths when he's just resting on me ie sitting relaxing but not actually sleep
Or does he have to be asleep?
But then again if you go near them they always wake up anyway don't they so surely they don't have to be actually sleep?

Why do you want to count them?

purpleme12 · 11/01/2022 00:10

Because I've been told to
Anyway I've just counted them when he's on me resting for the first time
We'll see how we go

Why have you been told to?

purpleme12 · 11/01/2022 00:35

Because the vet thinks his breathing is faster than you would expect
Don't worry I'm not doing it for fun 🤣

You have a bad vet. If my vet thought my cat's breathing was unusual, he would keep her in and monitor her himself.

What does the Vet say about the rate your cat is breathing? (or not).

Squirrelsbizaare · 11/01/2022 00:38

Does your cat have heart disease, failure ?
The vet told me to use cardalis to monitor breaths each day.

I've had to count my cat's breaths in the past. I just tried to do it when he was resting.

Not necessarily a bad vet, my cat got so stressed having to stay in that they couldn't really get a good count

Yes this is what I'm doing! I just started

His breathing is on the border at the minute
We are not sure if there is anything wrong yet. Because he has hyperthyroidism. It is possible it might be because of this but this isn't typical of hyperthyroidism so there could be something else

I don't think he's a bad vet
I don't want him kept in at this stage

Okay, due to the additional information you have posted, I retract the "bad vet" comment.

I feel so sad for you and your cat now.
