Thyroxine and throwing up

My 16yo cat is on 1.25ml of Thyroxine per day but since Christmas has thrown up several times. DH took him to the vet last week and he had a blood test for thyroid levels. The vet upped his dose by 0.1ml as a result. He had lost 400g since his last vet visit. We didn't mention the vomiting because at the time it was perhaps a one-off but this week it's been more times.

I am thinking he's maybe not tolerating the meds and wondering what to do? We never had a problem before. He was diagnosed last February I think and was just over borderline at the diagnosis so it was caught quite early.

Ps he seems fine otherwise, eating well, friendly, coat seems better and he has gone out today.

Our 16yr cat started vomiting a few months ago, just once a day but every day for a week or so. Other than that, she was fine in herself and showing no other signs of illness. When we took her to the vets it turned out to be her kidneys, so it might be worth getting it checked.

Thanks Saggy

Is your cat on any medication for its kidneys? Can anything be done? 16 is getting on of course, but I'd hoped catching the thyroid early would give us a few more years.

She was diagnosed in September with stage 2 kidney disease (there are 4 stages) so she was put on a renal diet (which she was thrilled about 🤣). Apparently, diet has the biggest impact on long term health. Vet also checked her blood pressure, as kidney disease can cause problems with it, but hers was fine so she didn't need any meds for that. Sadly we lost her just before Christmas, although I don't know if this was because of the kidney disease or just old age. She hadn't shown any outward signs of deterioration (and she was still terrorising the local mice in her final hours!). It might have just been her time. Fingers crossed you get good news though and it's something that's easily sorted.

Thanks Saggy. So sorry you lost her. I have let the kids know that my Dcat is really quite old in cat terms just in case this year isn't a good one. Lovely that yours was mousing to the last. Although not for the mice, of course Grin I just want to give mine the best life til the end. Although he'd be just as thrilled with a diet!

Is it thyroxine or thyronorm? If it is thyronorm this is a recognised side effect and you should contact your vet to discuss it.

Actually is is Thyronorm! And he is on 1.25ml twice per day. The last two meals I have mixed it up better in his food and mushed it up more in case he is eating the medicine bit first and not tolerating it.

We are taking other Dcat in for his booster in a few days so we'll mention it to the vet then. Thanks both.

Should actually be given directly into the mouth not in food, so this could be the problem.
