Ceiling to floor cat tree / scratcher - have you got one?

I am about to get a new sofa and I am worried about my cat scratching it like she has done with the old one.

I am going to get new scratch posts and just came across this amazing ceiling to floor pole and you can add different bits on at different times, but it is expensive, just wondering if anyone has one of these and if they are worth the money?

amazing cat tree pole

If not do you have a cheaper version like the ones on ebay and amazon

cheaper cat tree

Or any tips on how to save my new sofa? She trashed the last one Sad

I have sprayed areas of carpet my cat took a shine to with feliway spray which seems to have done the trick

I would say go for more, less expensive posts
that are tall like this one: www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/play-and-scratch-post

The thing I've found with cats is that they like variety. We have four of these posts dotted around our house so our cat can choose which one to scratch. He doesn't scratch the sofa.

I've always wanted to get one for my 4 cats as they love to climb and one loves to scratch the stair carpet! I was thinking about making a little climbing course for them over the dead space above the stairs.

My Dcat has 2 smaller scratchers (which he ignores), 5 that are a metre high and one big cat tree from Cat King, which is a combination of scratch poles and places to sit etc.

I also covered the side of my sofa in kind of clear-contact paper (found it on eBay, search ‘cat sofa stickers’ and heaps will come up). It was really cheap, hasn’t hurt the couch at all (you can’t see it) and Dcat slid off it the first time he tried to scratch it.

So I recommend lots of alternative scratching options (not just one), make sure they are a good height so DCat can stretch to them, and a good weight at the bottom so DCat can really attack.

I just got a new couch the other day and didn’t bother to do anything, as DCat felt he had enough scratching things and didn’t care about the new one! I’ll probably take the contact off now too.

Just to help - the 5 DCat has are like the ones @idril links above. He had these and was fine with them and the couch (with the contact covering it, so he couldn’t scratch).

The big cat tree came later, as I could see he wanted something big to climb. It wasn’t needed to stop him scratching the couch, but again I think the more things the cat IS allowed to play with, the less likely he is to try and wreck other stuff.

I got a standard cat tree similar to this one, though not that particular one.

5.5 years later it's still hanging on though a bit wobbly now, possibly due to the way my somewhat substantial cats leap to and from it and the sofa. They love scratching the poles (sizal rope covered), hide in the hutches, and pose on the platforms.

DH built one out of old branches and carpet offcuts. It didn't save our carpets, though!!

I was thinking of getting something like the Omlet one or the cat tree king one as I had to throw one out as it was utterly wrecked. I got new sofas last year and got the plastic covers but the little darlings are scratching where the covers aren’t Angry so I’ll need to get more.

What I’ve found is that most trees are designed for small cats of kittens, those of us with more rotund cats need bigger perched and pets (I’m looking at you DCat1 whose fat bum broke the last one). Having a mad teenager DCat4 doesn’t help matters either. I’ve promised them next payday at the end of January Grin

We have two of these extra tall scratching posts from Catit. Our cats love them, they sleep in the little box area and also on the removable (for washing) memory foam pads on the various shelves.

It's really sturdy and much more substantial than previous carpet covered ones we have had.

@jugglingjobs we have the cheaper one. It’s been quite well received by our 3

@sweetkitty l get what you mean. We have 2 svelte little girls and 1 monster with a big bum (weighs about 13 pounds!)
