Wood pellets and sifting litter trays

Does anyone have one of the sifting litter trays you use with wood pellets?

I was looking at the Brit-pet ones but they are pretty pricy so was after opinions before I invest.

I have always used clumping litter in the past but our new additions came from the shelter using wood pellets and I've found it tracks so much less than our previous litter (world's best, oko, greenwoods) so I'd like to keep using it and thought these trays seem like a good idea.

Any thoughts?

We use an ordinary litter tray. Buy the biggest cat poop remover ( by that I mean the biggest from Pets at home ) get hold of a dustpan and brush , just use the dustpan , hold it over the litter tray , pick up the offending sawdust litter and shake. The sawdust
through the holes into the dustpan , and the useable pellets stay in the litter scoop. Job done.

Thanks Jenna. That is kind of what I currently do as I use the scoop and shake the sawdust into a nappy bag. It works ok, but I end up chucking the litter out after a few days as I've had to move it around a lot to sift out the sawdust I feel that it isn't fresh any longer. I was thinking the sifting trays would alleviate this and would make the wood pellets last longer 🤔

Some of the pellets can get stuck in the sieve but hot water and a stiff brush or pokey stick will get rid of it. Don't scrub too vigorously unless you wear goggles and keep your mouth closed Grin

Thanks for the advice Troys 🤣 Can I ask which tray you use?

The one from Pets at Home their Lift to Sift tray.

I use wood pellets in a normal tray.
I use a garden sieve to shake out the sawdust into a bin bag.

The Pets at Home one is half the price of the Brit-Pet one!

Can I ask do you have the sieve on the top with pellets in that and let the sawdust fall through to the tray below or just use it like a normal tray and then pour the litter into the sieve and sieve it out that way?

Oooh Snozzle, that sounds like a great idea and it'll be much quicker than having to sift it all by hand. We currently have three trays and that would be much less of an investment as we could use it for all of them.

This is the one I use https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000TAOYRQ/ref=cmswemrmtdpM0S6K52KS0BB2XPAJH3Q?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Sifts the sawdust and unused pellets are left behind.

The Lift and sift has 2 trays, a sieve and a top to stop enthusiastic flicking out of litter. I remove poo then take the top tray off, empty into the sieve which sits on top of tray 2, sieve like a mad thing (good exercise for bingo wings) then put left over litter back in tray 1 and empty tray 2 into the bin.

We have the brit-pet one and it's great. Only downside with wood pellets is I do find the litter tray smells more than the others (we have 2 other trays with clumping litter in). Think this can depend which wood pellets you choose though. I still find it worth it as it saves so much money! A bag of wood pellets lasts so much longer than the clumping litter.

Logoplanter · 12/01/2022 17:14

Thanks all, that's really useful.

I've only used Pets at Home wood pellets so far and the two bags we've had have completely different pellets in - one very dark and one light. Both have been fine and seem to cover the smell ok and break down to sawdust easily. I wondered about B & M pellets as they are cheaper but I'm not sure if they'll be as good 🤔

I prefer the pets at home ones to B & M.
