Cat food suggestions needed

Hi. Could anyone recommend a cat food brand? I was using felix but it gave my cats upset tummies! It gave them terrible wind and diarrhoea. I switched to Tesco which was fine but my local Tesco never seems to have any. I’m worried about changing again in case it gives them tummy problems but equally I have 5 hungry, ex feral rescue cats! So a plentiful supply is required!! I don’t mind spending a bit a more for good quality but obviously with the volume of cats I have I need to be a bit careful Smile

have you tried the felix as good as it looks? finer pieces so easier to digest than regular felix.
Aldi's is pretty good and good value

Faxmesomehalibut · 06/01/2022 16:59

Thank you but I’ve tried that too. Felix just doesn’t agree with them. Which is annoying because it seems widely available. Haven’t tried Aldi. Thanks!

Been going through this lately with mine, who are suddenly NOT happy with Felix AGAIL after 5 years or eating it fine. I've found they prefer the pate/terrine styles best, and currently they seem to be happy on Sheba terrine and/or fine flakes.

They definitely seem to be having less smelly poos since I've moved them off the Felix - though the fine flakes pouches themselves smell worse than the Felix pouches

dementedpixie · 06/01/2022 18:16

Sheba stinks!
Mine are very fussy and some they like one week will be rejected the next week
They eat dry food reliably and I give them a mix of encore and thrive dry

Bozita is a great food and actually works out cheaper than felix and whiskers etc... but with a great high meat content. Look at zooplus.

Logoplanter · 06/01/2022 18:19

I'm interested in this too.

My two rescue cats came to me eating Felix and Butchers cat food. I started feeding them Felix as it was easy to get hold of and they seem to enjoy it. I've also gradually introduced Webbox cat food which I've picked up in Sainsbury's and is grain free. It has a higher meat content and is a little cheaper than Felix too. They enjoy it and it's been fine on their tummies (but so is Felix)

I've also picked up a box of Sainsbury's own food and Athena cat food which is also grain free. I've given them a little of the Sainsbury's food today and it was polished off. Will see what the litter tray is like later 🙈

I'm going to try and get the Butcher's food as that is supposed to be quite good (also grain free) and is also good value. I'd like them to eat a variety of food so I'm not stuck if they go off something or I can't get hold of it.

Logoplanter · 06/01/2022 18:26

With 5 cats you'd be better off buying tinned cat food rather than pouches as it will work out better value.

Also check out the packets and the recommended feeding guide as not all food is equal in terms of the amounts suggested to feed. Webbox recommended less than Felix did, based on cats of the same weight. I'm guessing that's because the meat content is higher so it's more filling.

Mine has a mix of Sainsbury's sachets - Complete Nutrition - and GoCat hard food (2kg big sack of it), both the senior 7+ type. She'll be 17 in May and eats well, no litter tray issues.

There is a Facebook group which is lobbying Purina, the manufacturer of Felix, to investigate their products (schools of thought are either a recipe change or packaging problems in their plants in Eastern Europe). Bewarned the group is a bit acrimonious and Purina vehement that there are no problems. If you go into a supermarket and there are shelves and shelves of their products with very little else left this is why. I changed from Felix as my kitty only licked off the jelly and stopped eating most of the flavours in the multi packs. She isn't thrilled with KatKin but will choke it down when I am not looking!

Faxmesomehalibut · 06/01/2022 19:17

I was buying tins of Tesco or pouches whichever I could get hold of. At the moment they just don’t seem to have anything. Shelves are always empty (while felix is spilling onto the floor!)
I’m not sure if there’s anything inherently wrong with Felix or if it’s just my kitties. Interesting though that others have had issues.
I might try own brand of sainsburys rather than Aldi as it’s more local to me. It’s so annoying as Tesco was cheap and they all liked it. Thanks all.

If you want supermarket stuff try butchers classic. Grain free and a higher meat content than most other stuff. Felix et al have about 4% meat and its like feeding mcdonalds everyday as its filled with loads of sugars and fillers. Not a great diet. Look at higher meat content food with no grains.

dementedpixie · 06/01/2022 19:39

They don't have 4% meat, they have at least 4% named meat with other meat not specified as being from a particular animal. Butchers classic also has meat and animal derivatives the same as most other cat foods

Faxmesomehalibut · 06/01/2022 19:40

Ah that’s interesting I didn’t know that about meat content. Thank you.

Delivery from Pets At Home? Most people would say go for low/no grain & high meat %. Buy a large selection since you have 5 cats to cater for, to find out what suits.

Changing diets never made any difference to my cats' health (top or bottom end response). No idea why not.

thickthighs73 · 06/01/2022 19:44

Applaws and Encore are both very good in my experience

Faxmesomehalibut · 06/01/2022 20:23

I used applaws for my cats in the past but they were very fussy and only liked certain flavours. This lot seem happy to eat anything. It’s just the effect it has on them that I’m worried about!
I’ll buy a few supermarket own and pets at home and see what suits them.
I’ll definitely check out the meat content though as I didn’t know about that.

You could always exolore the fresh/raw diet route?

Faxmesomehalibut · 06/01/2022 21:06

Yes. Could try that. Cooked chicken or something? Or fish? Probably be healthier.

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 06/01/2022 21:07

No cooked chicken or fish is not a complete diet for cats. It's would be a complex mix of raw meat and all the nutrients they would need
