Trimming Kittens Claws

Never had this issue before, but our kitten is not great at using her scratching post. She is not going outside yet as she is due to be spayed middle of January and so she will go outside probably mid to late February onwards.

I would not normally advocate trimming kitten claws but she is getting stuck to everything, carpet, bedding, clothes etc......... and it is driving her mad! She then squaks to be freed as she has got her claw stuck on something.

Has anyone done it before? I literally want to take the very tip off, just so she doesn't get stuck on everything! What tools do I need to buy? Should the vet do it instead of us?

Picture for you all!

You can buy clippers specifically for claws....our vets will do it for free.

I've done mine a couple of times, my husband holds him and I gently touch and hold his paw for a few minutes then gently squeeze to pop the claws out. I try to get it over with quickly and stop if he becomes agitated. It's easier than I imagined but I was so nervous the first time.
The vet will do them but bear in mind a trim will only last a couple of weeks.

If you're nervous I would ask the vet to do it. Our surgery allows you to make an appointment with a vet nurse to get it done.

If you cut too far down, you'll hit the quick and that can be really painful and cause a lot of bleeding, so best to get it done professionally the first couple of times if you're unsure - the nurse can show you what to look for and the best techniques too.

She is booked in tomorrow for the nurse to do it. She is going to show us how to do it as well. Only charge £5 but worth it as I have had 8 cats over my lifetime and none of them have ever needed it! This one has really long claws.

Well it's all change! Took her for her claws, saw our usual vet in the waiting area and they had a cancellation today for surgery so she is being spayed today! They are going to chip and clip her claws all at the same time so no lesson on clipping for us today! To be honest we may not need to do it again if she is being spayed earlier as she will go out earlier. I felt so mean leaving her, and luckily for us she hadn't eaten her breakfast this morning but they are not operating till this afternoon so they were happy as obviously she may of eaten overnight. Felt odd coming back without her though.
