Low potassium, faster breathing & lost weight

Has anyone had a cat with all of these symptoms?
Low potassium levels
Faster breathing than normal although not too much faster, almost borderline
And lost weight
If so, what was it?

Has the vet told you that? My guess would be kidney related. How old is your dcat?

purpleme12 · 01/01/2022 00:28

12
Tested for kidney and that's clear
He has had potassium liquid already because of low potassium
Breathing is not so bad that it's urgent and I think it's up to me whether we investigate that now or not
I just kind of wondered if anyone had had all these three put together

Has the vet suggested a cause? Is the potassium very low. Hope your dcat is a bit better today.

1vandal2 · 01/01/2022 21:19

Breathing is probably heart and lungs related.
They can do a blood test to Check on heart function Quite Easily

purpleme12 · 01/01/2022 21:31

I will be talking to the vet
But do you know how much that test is?
Mind you it's no good doing a heart test now cos he's also got hyperthyroidism so we know his heart is faster. This could most likely be due to hyperthyroidism
However what has got a question mark over it is whether something else is going on. It may or may not be to be honest. The signs aren't serious enough to say that there definitely is
That is the dilemma

How do you know he has low potassium levels? A blood test to check this would include measures to indicate problems with kidneys and heart to. If your dcat is breathing fast he needs to see a vet. Are you worried about the cost? Is your dcat registered with a vet? You can phone and ask about an initial consultation and bloods they will give you a price but, it sounds like he needs a vet soon please.
How is he today?

purpleme12 · 03/01/2022 20:42

Yes he's registered with a vet
He's being looked after already with the vet. We are treating for hyperthyroidism at the minute and I have been told to monitor the breathing
We'll see how that turns out. Bit nervous I won't monitor it right
Cost is something I'm sucking up. Let's just hope to god it's not anything more serious and I don't lose my job.

Ah glad to hear that. Animals can be so expensive. How old is your dcat? Is the fast breathing an indication that he may be getting worse?

purpleme12 · 03/01/2022 20:47

The breathing is 50/50 whether it's a symptom of just hyperthyroidism or something more
If I'd have known I'd have got insurance but you live and learn

Insurance is a difficult thing I have 2 dcat's, 1 is nearly 11 and the other is 3 and she is a Maine coon, I have insured the Maine coon as for some reason I figured as she was expensive it's worth it!! Not used the insurance yet 🤞. My older cat not insured has not really cost much just vaccines and flea treatment etc. The insurance goes up every year to. Currently £26 per month.

Fingers crossed for some good news. Sorry to you may have answered has your dcat's breathing rate reduced?

purpleme12 · 03/01/2022 22:17

I haven't started monitoring yet
But we've only just started treating for hyperthyroidism so it won't have reduced yet anyway
He wasn't as straightforward a case for hyperthyroidism as we had hoped. ☹️

Check for enlarged kidney

purpleme12 · 03/01/2022 23:25

Thank you

I know he loves us and I know he's so happy with us
I need to hope the hyperthyroidism medicine will make him go more bouncy again and that it's not cancer

My cat had similar symptoms (don’t know about the potassium) when his thyroid medication needed increasing. Hope your little cat improves soon.

purpleme12 · 03/01/2022 23:31

Thank you
That is encouraging
