Looking after a friend's cat while he's away for a few days. He's left a litter tray for her with a thinnish layer of non-clumping litter which is well used every time I go in.

I can scoop her poos off the surface but what do I do with the wees? Just leave them? Scoop out as much as I can? How often am I supposed to change the entire tray?

Don't want to bother friend to ask but could have done with more instructions as I have never used non-clumping litter (I use clumping for my own cats).

Depends to a degree on what type of litter it is. I use wood pellets, and I scoop out poos and any wet areas, then top it up as needed. I replace completely about every 7-10 days depending on the state they leave it in!

It's this stuff - Catsan non clumping. Wees are soaked up but they're hard to scoop away.

I use that litter but I fill the trays quite deeply. I scoop poo as they happen but I don't scoop wee, it doesn't clump so nothing to scoop.

I have 2 cats and change the tray they use every 4-5 days or so but again, I use a deep layer of litter

I have two litter trays now ( as suggested by a fellow mumsnetter) and find it much easier just to dump the lot and start afresh as it is the wee that makes it al smell

I think deeper litter is the key to this. Otherwise I'm going to have to be washing the tray out every day (or she'll stop using it and start weeing somewhere else 😭)

I use the same, deeper layers, scoop poo and leave the wee until it gets too much, then I change the lot. I also sprinkle in a layer of bicarbonate when doing a complete change and pour the litter in on top, I find it helps with absorbing the wee smell in between changes.

Same here. I scoop the poos, and pick the tray up and give it a side to side shake, but fill it very deep. Change the lot every 3-4 days. No smell issues at all.
