Cat licking artificial tree

My female cat is obsessed with licking the fake snow and branches on the tree. Has anyone else's cat done this? I'm sure it can't be good for her so we're going to keep the door closed unless we're in the room and can police it.

She's never done it before and we've had the tree for several years. The other 2 cats aren't interested in the slightest. Why?

Someone posted on Facebook to say the fake snow is poisonous to cats- no idea if true or why they’re attracted to it sorry.

I found this - Artificial snow, which can come in spray and solid forms is another substance which is toxic to cats if ingested and should be avoided. ... Cats can be attracted to it because it tastes very sweet. However, once swallowed it can cause severe kidney damage and can even be fatal.

Hope I haven’t panicked youSad I’d definitely keep the door shut, it says to watch the cat for any vomiting or odd behaviour. Hope all will be ok OP.

One of our cats licks the fake tree - not snow covered though. He likes a plastic bag too 🤪

Ours always chewed the tree, it's why we never got a longed for snow covered tree.

Is yours old or a decent purchase? There are some why say animal safe but not many. If you can find the shop you bought from to look it up that would be helpful. But you really need to stop the cat.

I know youre calling the vets but please ensure your cat is seen to ASAP as fake snow it toxic to cats.

Hi,

Thanks so much everyone - just to update. I had a video call with the vet immediately after posting and she was satisfied that Madam was ok, but advised to keep a close eye. The room with the tree was closed to cats and I was up the whole night trailing round after a skipping, pickling cat who thought it hilarious she had so much company and attention.

The tree's now been taken down and taken to the recycling centre and we are all merry and bright. Grin
