Searching for good cheap food for picky 10 yr old male cat

I've been trialling Katkin but my very picky cat leaves a lot in the bowl and won't touch it then, so I'm throwing a lot away and it's expensive! He's always been picky, goes off everything after a few pouches.

Any suggestions for good wet cat food, no grains or fillers, that isn't too expensive?

Have you tried Blink? They do trial packs on their website.

Sorry for the delay in replying.

I've looked at Blink, but it works out about the same and I guess he'll still go off it.

Maybe the only solution is to keep various sorts in the cupboard and keep swapping.

@flowersforbrains

13.5 year old cat here.

He has Hill's Science Plan biscuits with one sachet of either Whiskas, Felix or Sheba per day. He knows the difference between standard and premium brands. Came from the rough part of town so I have no idea where he got that from!

😂😂

That's what we do. Seems to work for Mr Fussykins!

Sheba fine flakes. We buy ours in home bargains or Aldi, £10.50 in those shops for 40 pouches. Not a scrap wasted. Have tried many cheaper but lots was thrown away.

I really don't see an issue with that if it works for your cat. I know MN is very keen on feeding the highest quality food possible but if your cat won't eat it, what's the point in wasting your money?

I've tried trial packs of all the ridiculously expensive, high quality brands and they turn their noses up at everything that isn't Felix Grin it's not extortionate - I spend probably £50 a month to feed three adult cats (including biscuits) which I really don't think is that bad once you break it down to what it costs per cat, per day.

This is what I do, and intersperse the one she really currently likes with others because if I feed it exclusively she will go off it sooner. Atm she likes Scrumbles (2 of the flavours), is ok with Canagan, tolerates Lily’s. Just trying out those Nature’s menu little tins.

I was glad when mine went off Meowing Heads - good quality, very moist, grain free, but really quite smelly

The reason I started feeding good quality food was because he's got a sensitive stomach, goes through phases of being sick or getting diarrhoea. That hasn't happened since feeding this food (it's just steamed meat).

@Mrsbrownsbuoys have you tried a food specifically designed for cats with sensitive stomachs?

Claudethecat · 19/12/2021 14:19

Have you tried Butcher's Classic? It is cheap, but also grain free. My cat loves it and has been eating it for years now. She is very healthy.

I haven't because I'm a bit dubious about the ingredients listed Confused I've been trying to stay away from dry food because he's prone to utis. I have fed Applaws in the past which has probiotics.

I have fed Butchers Classic in the past, I have many tins still in the cupboard. He only likes chicken flavour and only for a while. I can only buy 6 packs and he won't eat the other flavours Hmm

The thing is, it doesn't matter if it's the best food on earth - if it gives your cat the shits, it's a waste of money, frankly.

Just find a food (or a few foods) that your cat can tolerate and switch between them :)

I have a similarly fussy 11yo rescue, also with a sensitive stomach. Currently she has royal canin gastrointestinal dry food and seems to like that, but the wet food is a pain. She did like aldi salmon pate trays (so cheap!) but went off those. Tried pet plan gastrointestinal pate and she likes that but only in small quantities. Tried every high street brand but doesn't like most, especially hates felix doubly delicious it seemed! Vet prescribed gastro pouches also rejected. It's worse than feeding the kids! And that's saying something...
