Cat just ate paper cupcake holder - will he die?

Fucking idiot.

M&S had some cupcakes on yellow sticker so I bought a pack of two and settled down to eat one with my cuppa when I got back. Bastard Cat seemed very interested when I popped wrapper down, but I thought he was just going to lick the leftover hundreds and thousands etc.

I have just looked and he has actually eaten 90% of the paper cupcake wrapper Shock

He's an outside cat so I won't know if it affects his digestion.

Please tell me I don't have to go to the vets?

Ours has done this before and was fine. It's probably not great but we didn't need any vet intervention. Ours are both shits for stealing and eating things like this!

tillytoodles1 · 15/12/2021 13:53

My cat ate a whole strip of tinsel he stole from the tree. He pooed it out intact.

lockdownalli · 15/12/2021 13:57

That's impressive @tillytoodles1

He is currently running up and down the stairs like a maniac. Sugar rush I suppose.

Was there any chocolate in the cupcakes? Chocolate is pretty toxic to cats, symptoms are hyperactivity, diarrhoea and vomiting. If it's just paper, though, I wouldn't worry too much, just keep an eye on him.

lockdownalli · 15/12/2021 14:07

No, they were some sort of rainbow buttercream concoction - no chocolate.

He has eaten the paper, with a tiny amount of cake and buttercream and some sprinkles I didn't leave much obviously!

He is 15 and has never done anything like this before. He's gone out now so maybe he will throw up and I can relax.

Thanks for putting my mind at rest.

Cats are such bastards!

Personally even if hes an outdoor cat I would keep him inside for 24 hours so you can observe

Gonnagetgoing · 15/12/2021 14:10

It's paper, it'll dissolve hopefully and either break down or get pooed out the other end...

TheLongRider · 15/12/2021 15:27

One of mine ate a hair elastic last week. The eejit has never done it before and he's fine.

lockdownalli · 15/12/2021 15:31

Thanks. He's settled under the radiator as usual now.

I know I can't eat a ham sandwich or a tuna salad with him in the room - but he's never gone for cake before! I will mention it to the vet next time.

My last cat lived to 18+ and was a regular cake case stealer/scoffer.

Yep mine ate loads of that shiny ribbon from parcels under the tree. We didn't know she had until she started pooing and it didn't stop. She was trailing it about from her bum. Stressful Christmas, that one.

onethickpony · 15/12/2021 15:37

My cat ate a whole pampas grass yesterday, sicked it up this morning and so far he's still alive Grin

MoonbeamSprinkles · 15/12/2021 15:37

My cat only has one kidney so we’re very hyper vigilant to her being poorly.

She was completely off her food last week and wouldn’t walk, her back legs were giving way and I rang the emergency vet and begged for an appointment.
I was 100% convinced this was the end for her.

Then she pooped out the remains of a bag that oranges come in and was right as rain.

FrazzledMCPremenopausalWoman · 15/12/2021 21:16

Yep, paper is one of Dickhead Cat's favourites. Cardboard box flaps, newspaper, kids' homework sheets, wrapping paper, toilet roll... his digestive system must be about 90% paper and it still appears to work just fine. They're such idiots aren't they?

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 16/12/2021 11:31

I can only imagine what they eat when we can’t see them

ThoseFestiveLights · 16/12/2021 11:33

I’d probably give him lots of food so it works through quicker. But that’s what he’d TELL me to do

DropYourSword · 16/12/2021 11:37

Paper you say?
I think he’ll automatically wipe his own arse as he poops it out.

Are you actually serious? My cat did the exact same thing this week, she was off colour for a few days and just when I was going to bring her to the vet she pooed out an orange net and was fine! I thought my cat was surely the only one idiotic enough to eat an orange net, clearly not Confused
KittyKattyFosterMummy · 16/12/2021 11:39

I foster cats and have also had many of my own over the years and have come to the conclusion that they are both highly intelligent and incredibly stupid at the same time! I'm pretty sure your particular daft cat will be fine!

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 16/12/2021 11:39

haha! I'm going to show this thread to DP who likes to insist that cats are soooo much smarter than dogs and while dogs will any old shit (literally...), cats are much more discerning and would never eat anything that might hurt them Hmm

This is despite me telling him about two rescue cats I had years ago who had been underfed and neglected so when we first had them they were OBSESSED by food. If I was eating, they'd literally jump on my lap and try to eat the food out of my month. They calmed down once they realised that they had access to a regular, reliable source of food but before they did, they opened and ate a packet of chocolate mini rolls....the consequences were not pretty.

I hope your cat is OK OP. I'd have thought that paper would just pass through, or get sicked up.

SloeFox · 16/12/2021 11:42

I hope he is fine. FWIW our dog once ate an entire packaged kit kat. He was fine despite the chocolate and shitting silver paper for days.

MajesticallyAwkward · 16/12/2021 11:47

My cats are forever eating things they steal- plastic, sticky tape, tinsel, ribbon, banana fritters... no tuna can be left unguarded around them and one is a fan of a cup of tea.
Plenty of interesting poops and little piles of sick but no adverse affects.

I'd just keep an eye on him while he's around, as long as it was mostly chewed it will probably pass through but I'd pop to the vet if he stops eating and drinking or behaviour changes.

MajesticallyAwkward · 16/12/2021 11:49

Oh and the dog once ate an entire ice lolly, including the stick thanks to the toddler and was fine... clearly some robust animals around here

Toddlerteaplease · 16/12/2021 12:15

The late Maia would eat quality street wrappers. I usually managed to extract a slobbery wrapper from her mouth. (After a chase around the house!) I think she did swallow one once. But I never saw it come out. She was fine though

takingmytimeonmyride · 16/12/2021 12:16

My cat has eaten plenty of cupcake cases, thanks to my kids never putting them in the bloody bin. He is fine.
