Cat tripping us up on the stairs

How can I discourage this?

When he sees us heading up/down the stairs, he races up quickly, often getting under our feet and tripping us.

When he doesn't to that, he lays at the top of the stairs so we try to climb over him and plays with our feet. If he senses we're cautious, he then rushes down a couple of steps and stops to plays with our feet whilst refusing to move unless you climb a whole step over him.

Each of us have had falls down the stairs before DCat (who we've now had for 4 months and he's nearly 8 months) and I don't want him to keep tripping us up, especially as I'm pregnant.

@WorkingItOutAsIGo

Impressive thread where every single reply is just yup, my Dcat does that too. No help for the poor OP here!
Yep, unfortunately the answer is simply "cats are like that" 🤣

One of my cats is rather clingy (thinks he's a dog, comes when called, etc) and follows me around like a shadow. He will accompany me downstairs by rubbing against my legs and generally getting in the way trying to trip me up?. I joke that he's trying to murder me with "love" many a true word said in jest. 🙀

My cat gave my friend a fat lip once - she fell over him outside and hit her face on the step.
But obviously he is the boss so what can l do?!

I've had a cat in a flat and a baby with stairs but neither together.

DCat is a dog in training, will fetch, come on command, follow others on command to as well. If DD cries, he's there in a flash to see who hurt his human. A loyal catdog in other senses just not this one Sad

I stopped as a PP suggested, he laid on my foot and bit my slipper then I proceeded slower when he stopped yet he still got under my feet at a slower rate. The bottom gate won't solve anything because he runs like no cat I've ever seen before, almost like a hare, I don't get a chance to stop him. I'll either have to trap him in the living room it seems.

He's very clingy and I think this is where the stairs comes from. If he's rushing up them it's most likely so we can't close the gate (which he now struggles to fit through) or DD's bedroom door/the hallway door downstairs. I like to believe it's that and he's not trying to kill us all so he can have peaceful enjoyment of his home.

Yup, ours too. The other day we had one on the last step in either direction. They're both large enough to cover the entire stair tread and in the dark are virtually invisible.

Furry little gits.

I’m afraid my two do this as well. Every morning, down two flights of stairs.
Hold on to the bannister for dear life and walk slowly. It’s your only hope
