Grain free whiskas alternatives

Motorina · 29/11/2021 19:57

Advice please?

I was feeding the Kittens Little a grain free kibble, and then Whiskas sachets twice a day.

They stank!

So I took them off the Whiskas and things are very much more pleasant. Which is great, except we get twice daily performative starvation at their full food bowl.

Can anyone recommend a grain free non fart-inducing wet food they might like instead? I've already tried lily's kitchen but they looked at it like I was trying to poison them.

Thank you!

Thrive tins. They're like crack for cats. Particularly the chicken flavour I find. I bulk buy from Zooplus with their savings plan

ArsenicNLace · 29/11/2021 20:00

Mine loves Encore chicken. It appears to be shredded chicken and not much else.

It is literally the only wet food my cat eats. He does however live fresh prawns. However I do not earn enough to keep him supplied with amount of prawns he would like. Smile

Motorina · 29/11/2021 20:02

Fab! Thank you. I will try both of these.

The dogs will eat them if hte cats don't.

Any particular reason you'd choose grain free?
It's bulked out with legumes and linked to cardiac issues.

Veterinari · 29/11/2021 20:04

Ah sorry just seen PP have recommended 100%meat rather than grain free alternatives. Fair enough
Worth including dry kibble for completeness though as many boutique foods are complementary rather than complete

Motorina · 29/11/2021 20:05

@Veterinari because it makes them fart like you wouldn't believe. I thought it was the grain doing that?

Happy for any suggestions on non-flatulent alternatives. Grain free or not. I'm just sick of the constant litter tray horror and the low-hanging green clouds in the bedroom.

They have Little Big Paw chicken kibble down all the time. Which they will eat when I'm not watching. It's just they stand at the food bowl twice a day and tell me they're staaaaarving and they want their whiskas!

The Thrive I recommended is a complete food Smile

It's more likely the grain free kibble. It's usually bulked out with peas or other legumes in lieu of the grains.
As we know legumes are high fibre and induce flatulence

This is the ingredients list:

Chicken Meal (40%), Freshly Prepared Chicken (17%), Sweet Potato (14.5%), Chicken Fat (10%), Chicken Digest (3%), Cellulose, Peas, Beet Pulp, Brewers Yeast, Dried Egg, Salmon Oil (1%), Minerals, Dried Carrot, Seaweed Meal, Prebiotic MOS, Prebiotic FOS, Yucca Extract, Rosemary Extract, Thyme, Fennel, Peppermint, Dried Cranberry, Citrus Extract.

I'm working on the assumption that the herbs are basically there to justify the high price tag. But, whilst it does contain legumes, they're less than 3% (because chicken digest is 3% and they're lower down the list).

Would that be enough to cause cardiac issues?

The stinkyness has entirely resolved since stopping the whiskas so my working assumption is it was that. Certainly now they're on the kibble alone they're much better. But they're clearly missing the wet food, hence seeking suggestions of something they might enjoy and which would give variety.

No one knows - it's an area of research.

Sweet potato and beet pulp are also high fibre

My recommendation would anyways be a good quality complete kitten food by a company employing nutritionists over fancy high priced boutique foods with trendy ingredients and no credible nutritional research credentials

icedcoffees · 29/11/2021 20:43

Unfortunately, Whiskas is an awful quality food which is why they had smelly poo - it's probably nothing to do with the fact that it contains grain.

A food that's 40% chicken meal isn't brilliant either though - meat should be the primary ingredient in what you're feeding your pet. Not meat meal, actual meat.

Motorina · 29/11/2021 20:44

@Veterinari - any suggestions? I'm happy to try different things til I figure out what works for them.

Hills, Iams, Eukanuba, etc
Most of the big manufacturers

You can filter by age, budget etc.

Only if you don't understand the difference between ingredients and nutrition

Some one will be along in a minute to recommend that pet food website run by the bloke with no nutritional qualifications and a 15 year old undergrad zoology degree. Cos that's the hallmark of informed pet nutrition

Motorina · 29/11/2021 20:57

Okay I'm going to ask for this thread to be closed. All I wanted was some suggestions on alternatives to a food that was disagreeing with my kittens that they might like, but it seems to be deteriorating in a way which is unhelpful.

Thanks to those who have given suggestions.

Not the usual one recommended
However I'll retain a healthy level of cynicism about a ratings website produced by a pet food manufacturer as an unbiased source

It does acknowledge that chicken meal is a good protein source though so doesn't exactly support the PP assertion below

ItsSnowJokes · 29/11/2021 21:03

Rosies farm is good for us. Very high meat content.

SkankingMopoke · 29/11/2021 21:04

My cat likes the Encore tins too, but will also happily eat the tins or pouches of the posher Sainsbury's own brand (in a black box), or Waitrose own brand in little tins. All of them are shredded/flaked meat or fish with a sauce, and the Waitrose ones have whole little shrimp etc in there too.

Be careful with the encore and sainsburys brand one not all of them are a complete food and are just a complementary food, so not getting all the nutrients they need. They are ok if being fed with a dry food or as a treat but not alone.
SkankingMopoke · 30/11/2021 07:29

She gets dry food too, but OP was asking for wet food to compliment the biscuits...

Toddlerteaplease · 02/12/2021 23:00

My very sensitive and very pongy cat has done much better on Iams dry food. They don't have we as the won't eat it.
