Cats on wrong side of bannister

We have just adopted 5 month old cats from a rescue. They are allowed supervised access to hall and landing but stay in one room when we are out. But on the landing they are walking on the wrong side of the bannister and I am a nervous wreck! But dh says that if we put anything there to block it they will just climb up that? Can anyone advise?

Sorry, no advice…. Cats gonna cat

That looks like a very happy puss up there!

PissyMum · 20/11/2021 21:11

It’s what they do. If you try and block it off they will find a way around it and balance there even more precariously. Cats (mostly) know what they’re doing. Although my cat jumped out of a velux window because he saw a bird at a similar age, promptly fell off the roof and landed on the patio three floors down. I was fully expecting to go out there and have to scrape him up off the concrete but he was just sat there looking mildly surprised with a tiny cut on his chin. Bloody idiot.

PissyMum · 20/11/2021 21:12

Lovely looking house though.

ofwarren · 20/11/2021 21:13

He will be fine, it's what cats do

Mumdiva99 · 20/11/2021 21:13

Mine do this....heart in mouth moment every time. Plus they have learnt to jump on top of the high bannister which is even more scary as their claws have nothing soft to grab.

I agree with dh you have to let them do it.

RaoulDufysCat · 20/11/2021 21:16

This is fine. They won't hurt themselves.

I would just let them roam the house if it was me, the worst thing they might do is scratch something. It must be a bit miserable being shut in one room. Close doors to anywhere they really must not go but please give them a bit more roaming room.

Also, I like your print on the floor below!

loyalandnaturalboy · 20/11/2021 21:17

Yes we are intending to give them run of the house we are just a bit nervous as v early days!

Just wait till they’re atop the peak of your house roof like little furry sky dishes OP.

Or spins over it.....

One of mine used to sit exactly where yours is, but on top of the bannisters, with her tummy hanging over space. She never fell down. She also used to sit on top of an open window when I lived in a fifth floor flat, I'd get off the bus and look up and see her watching the world go by....

Theunamedcat · 20/11/2021 21:35

I would be wanting to extend it like a shelf Blush

Oh my god! 😱
nocoolnamesleft · 20/11/2021 21:52

There's only one way to stop it. Put a cat bed there. They'll never deign to occupy the spot again.

Santaischeckinglists · 20/11/2021 21:54

When I was a teen my dm's bff had a gorgeous black dcat called Leroy. He used the outside window box as a litter tray.
They were in the third floor flat...
Shock
He was fine.
Is it your pfb op??

RandomMess · 20/11/2021 21:56

Mine didn't use the stairs when young just dropped from landing to ground floor 🤷🏽‍♀️

CatsOperatingInGangs · 20/11/2021 21:57

I used to work at some stables and the farm cats there used to spend more time up in the rafters than they did in the floor. They’re predators so will always like a high up perch to survey their lands and potential prey.

It’s lovely that you’re so worried about your cat but he looks fine. Lovely cat you’ve got and a lovely house too

TamzinGrey · 20/11/2021 22:02

Please don't panic. You've got a very happy relaxed kitty there so well done. Nothing bad will happen.

Excellent idea
Toddlerteaplease · 20/11/2021 22:11

Lovely house!

notangelinajolie · 20/11/2021 22:15

I don't think you will be able to stop her OP.

Some cats just like to climb. As far as my cat is concerned, the higher the better.

I've lost count of the people who have knocked on my door telling me there was a cat on my roof.
She also sits in trees (big ones).
And her favourite hobby when she was a kitten was climbing up the curtains and going to sleep on top of the curtain pole.

Christmas is always fun (for her, not me) - despite my efforts to stop her she always manages to sneak up to the top of the tree and find a comfy branch to sleep on. (After destroying my beautifully decorated tree first).

MollyVolley · 20/11/2021 22:16

This is my 6 month old on a hanging cat bed! I've a similar stairs to you! Mine have climbed really high trees and climbe duo porch roof and come in 2nd floor window! They love height!
