Cat won’t go out

You may remember I adopted Zeus, an ex feral a few months ago. Update: he will now tolerate me being in the same room as him and will use his tray - he decided where it would go. The new problem is that he won’t go out. I know he was outside for 5 years but I’m worried he will be bored and switch off. He won’t play, doesn’t do zoomies. He just potters around between watching the world go by in the front room window then to his room for a nap. I’m also worried that his claws will get too long as he isn’t wearing them down by going out, and he still won’t let me near him to check. Thanks if you got to the end of this mini essay, I just want to make sure he has the best care as he had such a poor start to life.

Sounds like he's loving his new life tbh.

Our rehome sounds very similar but with lots of crazy zoomies to annoy old girl and dog.

Have you a decent scratching post? We have the barrels from Zooplus and they love them.

Yes he has but he doesn’t seem interested. I feel so sorry for him. He never had a kittenhood or learned how to play.

He's warm, fed has company he probably thinks he's a king!

Get some of scratchers and leave them around the house. Spray with catnip spray to encourage him. That will take care of the claws.

If he wants to stay in, let him. He's made a choice and if he decides he wants to go out in the future the option is there. I know it's stressful trying to make sure he has a better life but OP he already sounds like he's won the lottery! Grin

Do you open the door for him to go out? If you do and he's still not interested then I would agree with a previous poster in saying he is just loving his new cosy life. Also, do you know how old he is? If he is getting on a little bit he may be taking things a bit easier now? I swear my 9 year old cat doesn't move from the time I leave for work at 8.30 until I walk back through the door at 5.30!

Are you sure he doesn't go out at night? Even if he doesn't, agree with PPs that be sounds pretty content!

Maybe he'll explore more when the weather is better and you are outside with him. The door can be left open for him to go in and out easily with less anxiety.

How would he get out now? Is there a cat flap? Does he know how to use it? Does he know he can come back in?

He sound like he is taking time to settle in. As for playing, do you have different sorts of toys? A ping pong ball, a bouncy ball, things with feathers, a ball of foil....play with them in front of him. One of mine only really plays when she thinks we aren't watching. And then it's not for long.

A box with a hole in the front to jump I'm and things dangled in from a small hole in the top is always quite popular here.

I do leave the door open for him - he can see it from his window bed. He has toys and a scratcher. He’s 5. I think I’m just over worrying about him but worried about his claws getting overlong. Thankyou for all the nice and helpful comments
